Washburn has quick start, McLaughlin holds off Fort Kent

FORT KENT – Washburn pitcher Nicole McLaughlin made her team’s five-run first inning stand up as the Beavers downed Fort Kent 5-4 in softball action Thursday.

McLaughlin struck out seven and walked five as the Beavers held on for a win. Amber Palmer, Tiffany Carter, and Liza Maynard each hit two singles.

The first inning featured five singles, a two-run double by Kristen Carter, two walks, and three stolen bases.

Leah Babin led the Warriors with a double and two singles. Melissa Morneaul had a double, single, and an RBI. Iris Guimond and Monique Labbe each hit two singles.

At Ashland, Pam Spooner pitched her second straight shutout for the Hornets, striking out nine batters.

Amber Smith led the Ashland offense with a double, solo homer and two RBIs. Cora Campbell added a two-run single in the first inning for the Hornets.

Tasha Dwyer and Shanelle Dwyer had Hodgdon’s only hits, both singles.

At Dyer Brook, Audrey Charette hit a three-run homer in the third inning, doubled, and singled to drive in four runs and lead the host Southern Aroostook Warriors.

Christine Lawlor had a double, two singles and four RBIs while Carmen McLaughlin had three singles and four RBIs. Chelsea Collier is 4-0 with a complete-game effort.

Jessica Green and Brooke Smallwood had a double and a single for the Cougars of Stacyville.

At Millinocket, Leslie Osborne’s single in the sixth with one out and the bases loaded broke a 2-2 tie and sent the Stearns Minutemen on to victory.

Holly Franck had three singles and Johnna Michaud hit a two-run single for Stearns.

Laurie Bissonnette hit an RBI single and the other Houlton run came via an Anna Lenentine fielder’s choice.

Mia Megquier had two singles and Jen Wright one single for the Trojans.

Cassie White had two singles for the Hawks.

At Old Town, Jen Higgins’ suicide squeeze bunt scored Shaylee Moulton to give the Tribe the win in 11 innings.

Moulton ended up with three singles and Jamie Gomm added two singles with an RBI for Old Town. Liz Bergeron struck out 18 batters.

Michelle Barden had two singles for Nokomis of Newport and Delaney Farnham notched four singles with an RBI.

At Bucksport, Alice Andrews scored on an error in the bottom of the seventh to give the Golden Bucks the win.

Jessie MacDonald laid down a drag bunt for a single, and the ball was thrown away. Andrews finished with two singles, MacDonald a single and two RBIs, and Jill Richards two singles.

Katie Quimby singled and tripled for the Witches and Kim Foster singled in a run.

At Searsport, Laura Hamm’s leadoff single and Amber Leathers’ run-scoring single keyed a two-run sixth inning that broke a 4-4 tie and supplied Bangor Christian with the win.

Jen Hutchins and Jenny Spaulding each singled and scored a run for Bangor Christian and Megan Mishou went the distance for the win.

Megan Brassbridge doubled, singled twice and scored twice for Searsport while Theresa Cameron and Nori Francis-Mezger each had a double and two RBIs.

At Millinocket, Derek DiFrederico and Matt Barnett each had a 2-run single to pace the Minutemen.

Craig Cullen had two singles and three RBIs for Stearns. Craig Jandreau tripled and Matt Wark doubled and singled.

Ryan Schools hit a 2-run homer for the Shiretowners.

Kevin Ledger hit three singles, a double and plated three runs while Jimmy Griffin added three singles, a triple and two RBIs for the winners. Bruce Currie doubled and singled while Tyler Schools hit three singles.

Kenny Lewin and Chris Long each had two-run singles for the Hornets.

At Dyer Brook, Adam Anderson and Zack Austin combined to allow only three hits in five innings to lead the undefeated Warriors to their third win.

Each pitcher struck out six batters and each issued only one walk.

Jeff Boutilier paced the Warriros with two singles, a double and RBI while Anderson chipped in with a triple, single and two RBIs. Griffin Hardy added an RBI double.

Cameron Cunningham, Frank Grass and Owen McCarthy each singled for the Cougars of Stacyville.

At Old Town, Ed Jacques pitched a two-hit shutout with eight strikeouts and two walks as Nokomis of Newport earned its first win of the spring.

Jacques outdueled Old Town’s Cory Estes, who allowed just four hits and two earned runs while striking out seven and walking no one.

Seth Bradstreet doubled and singled for Nokomis, while Jacques added an RBI single.

Corey Emerson doubled for Old Town.
