CHERRYFIELD – A limited fly fishing season on the Narraguagus River will open Saturday, May 1, and continue through June 10.
Earlier this year, the state Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife and the Atlantic Salmon Commission agreed to close to fishing the portion of the river known as Stillwater Pool – about 1,700 feet of river, beginning at the ice control dam in Cherryfield.
The area has been marked, and is open to fly fishing only.
The pool is popular among shad fishermen this time of year, but once the water warms up in June, the shad move on, according to commission biologists.
In recent years, a few fishermen have targeted the endangered Atlantic salmon in the area while claiming to be fishing for shad, according to the Maine Warden Service.
Fishing for wild Atlantic salmon is illegal throughout Maine.
