Thomas Terriers maul Castleton

WATERVILLE – The third-seeded Thomas College Terriers moved into the winners’ bracket by beating the second-seeded Castleton State Spartans 11-2 in North Atlantic Conference tournament baseball action Friday.

Thomas meets UMF today at noon.

Jevon Owens spread out seven hits and struck out eight to lead Thomas. Lance Haynes high a homer and three singles good for four RBIs, while Matt Pavlis hit a double and three singles. Scott Brawn added a home run and a double with three RBIs.

Chris Alger led Castleton State with two singles.

At Waterville, Zack Reed scattered eight hits, striking out five, to help the fourth-seeded Beavers beat the No. 1 Hawks. UMaine-Farmington plays No. 3 Thomas College of Waterville today at noon.

John Rutkiewicz powered the Beavers, who piled up 20 hits, with a double, three singles and three RBIs while Reed added two doubles, a single and three RBIs. Peter McLaughlin provided two doubles, a single and three RBIs and Eric Cummings belted a grand slam.

Caron hit two homers and knocked in three runs for Becker College of Leicester, Mass.

Husson sweeps UMPI

At Presque Isle, Josh Ferguson hit five singles to lead a 33-hit barrage by Husson College as the Braves swept a doubleheader from the University of Maine-Presque Isle by scores of 15-2 and 12-0.

In the first game, Kyle Mathieu hit three singles while Ferguson and Steve Estes each had two.

Josh Berry led the UMPI Owls with a double and a single. Ryan Morrison and Ben Goodwin each hit a double.

In the second game, Chris Sargent pitched a one-hitter while striking out six and walking one to pace the Braves. Larry Fickett’s pinch-hit single with one out in the sixth foiled Sargent’s no-hit bid.

Aaron Brideau and Ferguson each singled three times. Jason Folsom had a triple and two RBIs while Chris McInnis added two singles and an RBI.

At Norton, Mass., John Albondi drove in the go-ahead run on a pinch-hit single during a three-run seventh inning to lift Wheaton to the comeback win.

Tip Fairfield hit a double and two singles for the University of Southern Maine and Brandon Brewer hit a solo home run. Joe Ganley doubled and singled with two RBIs.

At Chicopee, Mass., Taralee Webster fired a three-hit shutout, striking out one and walking nobody. Third-seeded Husson faces No. 1 and host Elms today at 10 a.m.

Carmen Ballard, Rachel Wing and Wendy Butler posted two singles apiece for Husson College of Bangor.

At Chicopee, Mass., the Terriers advanced to Saturday’s second round by eliminating the Spartans. Thomas College of Waterville plays the loser of the Husson-Elms game at noon.

Mistie Bickford and Jen Lane hit RBI doubles to key Thomas’ decisive three-run fifth inning. Bickford also singled for the Terriers behind Joy Ireland, who pitched a three-hitter.

Kelli Walsh led Castleton with a run-scoring single.

At Chicopee, Mass., Jamie Parslow hit an RBI single in the seventh to give Elms the first round victory over Thomas.

Losing pitcher Joy Ireland paced the Terriers with two singles and an RBI. Kayla Beaudoin had tied it at 3-3 with an RBI triple in the seventh.

Little East Tournament

At Keene, N.H., Meg Cirigliano scored the game-winning run on a University of Southern Maine error to help lead Western Connecticut State University to the Little East Conference Tournament win over Southern Maine.

Jen Caveney hit a triple and a single with an RBI for Western Connecticut.

Caterina Riitano drove in both runs for the Huskies on a two-run homer in the second inning.
