A local woman was injured Friday afternoon in a three-car accident after she allegedly ran a stop sign on Plaisted Street in Bangor, hit two cars and then drove head-on into a tree.

Eileen Carroll, 40, was taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center, was treated and then released, a nursing supervisor said.

The accident took place at 1:15 p.m. at Hammond Street and Royal Road. Carroll was driving a 1995 Chevrolet Camaro on Plaisted Street when she allegedly ran the stop sign, according to Bangor police Lt. Mark Hathaway.

Carroll’s vehicle hit a 1997 Ford on Hammond Street that was driven by Melvin Coffin, 63, of Bangor. Carroll hit a second vehicle, a 2002 Toyota SUV driven by Barbara Rosenthal, 54, of Bangor, who was at the stop sign on Royal Road. According to the police report, Carroll then drove head-on into a tree on Royal Road.

All drivers and passengers involved were wearing seat belts. No other injuries were reported.

Bangor Police and Fire departments went to the scene.

Hathaway said Friday a possible traffic violation was under investigation.

A Bangor woman was issued a summons for assault Friday after she reportedly hit an 11-year-old girl in the face.

Bangor police Officer Douglas Moore went to a Broadway residence where he found several people standing outside and a small girl holding an ice pack to her face.

The girl’s 33-year-old mother told Moore she was driving home with her daughter and two other passengers when they saw a woman walking near the residence.

Moore’s report said the woman, Crystal Bassett, 23, approached the driver’s side of the car and said, “Who in this car has a problem with me?” Bassett then punched and spit at the 11-year-old girl through the open window, Moore’s report said, and walked down Broadway, eventually going into another residence.

All of the vehicle’s passengers confirmed the story and gave Moore a description of the woman. Moore knocked on the door of the residence Bassett had entered and a woman matching the description answered.

Moore asked Bassett what happened and she said she didn’t know what he was talking about. She was intoxicated, Moore’s report said, and admitted to having “about five drinks.”

Bassett agreed to go with Moore back to the scene of the alleged assault, but the woman said she had not hit the girl. Bassett did admit to hitting the mother.

Moore issued Bassett a summons for assault, and the 11-year-old was taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center to be examined.
