Bears sweep UVM Quintal’s 6 RBIs keys Sunday win

BURLINGTON, Vt. – The University of Maine baseball team completed a three-game weekend sweep of Vermont on Sunday, as Ryan Quintal homered and drove in six runs to lead the Black Bears to a 14-4 victory at Centennial Field.

Maine improved to 25-16 overall, 8-4 in America East play, and now rests tied for second in the conference with Northeastern, one game behind first-place Albany. Vermont dropped to 11-23 overall, 4-8 in conference play.

The Bears swept Saturday’s doubleheader, scoring twice in the ninth inning to win the first game 7-5 and overcoming a six-run deficit to win the second game 9-8.

Aaron Izaryk added three hits and four RBIs in Sunday’s game for Maine, which rapped out 16 hits off four Vermont pitchers.

Simon Williams, Greg Creek, Joel Barrett, Joe Hough, Jason Harvey and Quintal each added two hits for the Black Bears.

Maine trailed 2-0 after two innings thanks to back-to-back homers by Vermont’s Kyle Brault and Barry Chamberland.

The Black Bears then scored 14 runs in their next four at-bats, highlighted by a seven-run rally in the top of the seventh that featured a two-out, three-run homer by Quintal.

Maine starter Troy Martin (3-0) earned the pitching win, allowing five hits and four earned runs over 7 2/3 innings. At one point, he retired 15 straight Catamounts.

Ryan Harris pitched 1 1/3 innings of hitless relief.

Miguel Magrass added two hits, including a home run, for Vermont in Sunday’s game.

In Saturday’s seven-inning nightcap, the Catamounts led 5-0 after one inning and 8-2 through four, but the Bears came roaring back despite grounding into five double plays.

Freshman Steve Richard (3-2) pitched 3 2/3 innings of two-hit shutout relief to earn the win.

Harvey of Bucksport paced UMaine with three singles, including the game-winning hit with two out in the seventh inning. Quintal (RBI), Matt McGraw and Williams had two singles apiece for the Bears.

Magrass led Vermont with a three-run homer, a triple, and an RBI double.

Trailing 8-2, UMaine scored five times in the fifth, chasing starter Justin Bissonnette. Izaryk hit a run-scoring single, Barrett was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, Hough delivered a sacrifice fly and Quintal had an RBI single in the inning, which included two Catamount errors.

The Bears tied it in the sixth when Harvey walked, Williams beat out an infield hit, Izaryk laid down a sacrifice bunt and Creek reached on a run-scoring fielder’s choice.

In the seventh, McGraw singled with one out and pinch-runner Pete Saunders was erased on Quintal’s fielder’s choice. Mike Ferriggi walked, setting up Harvey’s single to right.

Bobby Tewksbury hit a solo homer off UMaine starter Greg Norton, who allowed 10 hits and seven earned runs in 3 1/3 innings.

In Saturday’s scheduled nine-inning first game, the Bears scored twice in the ninth to break a 5-5 deadlock.

Williams led off with a single, moved up on the first of two Izaryk sacrifice bunts on the day, and took third on Creek’s flyout. Barrett plated the winning run with a single to right field and eventually came home on a single to left by Hough, who led UMaine with a two-run homer, three singles and another RBI.

Quintal tripled and singled for the winners behind Harris (4-2), who came on in relief to pitch a hitless eighth before Scott Robinson earned his fifth save by retiring UVM in order.
