Thomas teams win baseball, softball titles

WATERVILLE – Third-ranked Thomas College edged No. 2 Castleton (Vt.) State 8-5 in 10 innings Sunday to win the North Atlantic Conference baseball championship Sunday.

Castleton scored twice in the bottom of the ninth to forge a 4-4 tie, but Thomas countered with four runs in the top of the 10th to gain the win.

Tourney MVP Jim Pierce had three hits and an RBI for Thomas, while Brandon Connors added a homer for the Terriers.

On Saturday, Castleton State scored four runs in the last three innings to knock off top-seeded Becker College 5-4, while Thomas advanced to the championship round by defeating UMaine-Farmington 9-8. Castleton State then earned its trip to Sunday’s final with a 5-4 win over UMF.

At Worcester, Mass., Rodney Ames went 5-for-9 as Colby swept Hamilton in a doubleheader played at Worcester Polytechnic Institute.

In the first game, Ames had two homers, a double and six RBIs, while Tyler Hales added two doubles for the Mules. In the second game, Ames had another home run, while Vincent Domestico had three hits and five RBIs and Andy Carr had three hits and two RBIs for Colby.

Southern Maine sweeps Husson

At Gorham Sunday, Greg Stacy hit a home run and two singles to drive in five runs and help the University of Southern Maine past Husson 18-5 in the first game. The Huskies also won the second game 17-5.

In the first game, Brandon Brewer singled and homered for the Huskies and Brian Marshall had three singles.

Jason Folsom, Kyle Mathieu and Chris McInnis each had two singles for Husson.

In the second game, Adam Lemieux hit for the cycle to knock in four runs for Southern Maine. Brewer homered and singled as Marshall and Andrew Portwine each hit a double and a single.

Folsom had a triple and a single for Husson and Adam Sheehan doubled.

At North Dartmouth, Mass., on Saturday, Tip Fairchild earned the pitching win in both ends of the doubleheader for the University of Southern Maine.

In the first game, Fairchild also had three hits, as well as pitching three innings of scoreless relief. In the second game, Fairchild earned the start and shut out UMD over the first five innings. Adam Lemieux had three hits and two RBIs for the USM.

At Norton, Mass., Saturday, Brandon Leonard hit for the cycle with two singles, a double, a triple and a home run to drive in four RBIs and help Wheaton College to the win.

Ben Munis had a home run, double and three singles with five RBIs for St. Joseph’s.

Bowdoin sweeps Middlebury

At Brunswick Sunday, the Polar Bears outslugged Middlebury to win two games, 15-12, and 13-12.

In the first game, Jon Koperniak had a two-run single, an RBI single and a solo homer good for four RBIs to lead Bowdoin. In the second game, Nick Lawler was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the eighth to give Bowdoin the sweep.

Thomas wins NAC tourney

At Chicopee, Mass., on Saturday, Joy Ireland gave up just one run, two walks and three hits while striking out three to help Thomas College past Husson College 5-1 to claim the North Atlantic Conference Championship.

Earlier in the day, Thomas defeated Elms 2-1 and Husson 5-1 to reach the final round, while Husson defeated Elms 2-1 before falling twice to Thomas.

In the championship game, Kayla Beaudoin hit a double and two singles with three RBIs for Thomas and Mistie Bickford doubled and singled with one RBI. Jasmine Carey and Jen Lane each hit two singles. Ireland was named the tournament MVP and Courtney Corbett and Mistie Bickford were both named to the NAC all-tournament team.

Carolyn McAvoy hit a RBI double in the first inning for Husson. Carmen Ballard and Deanna Maxim each singled. McAvoy, Ballard, and Rachel Lane were all named to the all-tournament team.

W. Connecticut wins LEC

At Keene, N.H., Saturday, Meg Cirigliano hit a double and a single to lead Western Connecticut State University to the 6-3 win over the University of Southern Maine to win the Little East Conference tournament. Southern Maine defeated Keene State 2-1 in 16 innings to advance to the championship round.

In the championship game, Caterina Riitano hit a two-run home run in the sixth inning for Southern Maine.
