TREMONT – Town meeting voters will be asked next week to approve a $3.4 million budget for the new fiscal year, including $2.5 million for local education.
Three residents are seeking the one open seat on the Board of Selectmen, replacing Scott Harper for a three-year term. They are Charles Dillion, Amy Murphy and Patti Tinker.
Dillion serves on the planning board and capital improvement committee.
Susan Dombroski and Elizabeth Erickson are seeking the two open school board seats, replacing Christina Butler and John Horton.
Erickson has served on the town’s land use ordinance committee.
Herbert Shaw, appointed to fill a vacancy on the school board, is running for a full one-year term, and James Geary, appointed to fill a vacancy on the Mount Desert Island Regional High School board of trustees, also is seeking a full one-year term.
The only significant increases in town spending are proposed for public safety, according to Town Manager Millard Billings.
Selectmen will ask voters to set aside $21,000 to match a potential grant for a new $215,000 firetruck.
Also, the town wants to maintain its police protection, provided by contract with Maine State Police, regardless of whether more federal funds are available to pay part of the trooper’s salary.
Billings said the town was late in taking advantage of the federal Community Oriented Policing Services grant, which gives towns up to $125,000 over three years toward the salary and benefits of police officers.
The town has asked for an extension on its grant, but selectmen increased the proposed law enforcement budget by $43,000 to keep the trooper regardless of whether more federal money is available, Billings said.
The town meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 11, at Tremont Community Center. Municipal elections will take place on May 10, with polls open from 1 to 8 p.m. at the community center.
