BUCKSPORT – Terren Hall stood near the home dugout at John Wardwell Field as the rest of her teammates chatted about what she had just done.
No one on this Bucksport softball team had ever seen a player hit a home run out of the park here until Hall smacked one over the 200-foot fence in left field during the fourth inning of their 9-0 win over Mount Desert Island Tuesday.
“I want that ball,” Hall told the Golden Bucks.
Hall’s homer drove in two runs and she also singled in the third inning. The fact is Hall could have earned the game ball for her pitching, too.
The freshman tossed a one-hitter as the Bucks, now 5-1, rallied from Saturday’s 6-1 loss to Ellsworth. Hall struck out four, walked three and hit one Trojan batter. She stuck with her fastball and mixed in some curves.
“Her fastball was working really good,” coach Mike Carrier said. “[Catcher Alice Andrews] was moving it around for us. We used a curve more than her dropball for today because that was working a little bit better.”
Carrier, who is in his 14th season, said a Foxcroft player hit a home run out of the park about six years ago, when the fences were about 220 feet out. But that game was rained out before it became official.
It was also the first home run of the season for the Bucks, who pounded out 15 hits Tuesday after just three Saturday. MDI pitcher Nia Megquier had a 3-1 count when Hall hit her homer.
“It looked like a straight fast ball,” Hall said. “When I saw the flight of the ball I knew it was going to go over [the fence]. … Everybody usually hits pretty well.”
Bucksport already had the game in hand thanks to a two-run double by Jill Richards in the second inning, an RBI groundout by Kristi Allen in the fourth, and a Felicia White RBI single later in that inning for a 4-0 lead.
Richards finished with three RBIs and freshman Katie Hurd singled once and doubled twice.
MDI’s Rachel Russell hit a ground-ball single to left field in the fifth as the Trojans loaded the bases. Hall assisted on three groundouts to end the inning.
“We have a very good defense this year,” Hall said. “Everybody works well with each other.”
The Trojans (4-3) played solid defense despite the loss.
“I’m proud of the way we played today,” said Bunky Dow, the MDI athletic director and first base coach who served as the head coach Tuesday because Pam Bush was out sick.
“We have to work on a few things, get the bats going,” he added. “We’ve been struggling with the bats. Defensively we were pretty sound, and once we get the bats going we’ll be alright.”
