BANGOR – There weren’t any special festivities to mark the opening of the new Bangor High softball field. In fact, the closest the Bangor softball team got to fireworks was a third-inning RBI triple and 10 strikeouts by Kelly White.
But Tuesday afternoon’s 7-0 win over Old Town and the knowledge that the Rams have a field at the high school again was enough for Bangor.
“It’s definitely awesome playing on this field. Our field before was alright, but this is great,” said senior Steph Chase, who as an outfielder was able to appreciate the differences between the old field and the new one. “There’s grass and it’s not as bouncy. It’s pretty nice.”
Bangor has been playing its home games at the Union Street Complex after years of play on the old field at the high school. Construction on the replacement field started last fall and was complete by this spring.
The Rams broke in home plate in a hurry Tuesday, with a run in the first and two in the third.
Chase had an RBI groundout in the first and a sacrifice fly that produced a run in the third. She had an RBI single in the fourth when Bangor scored four more runs.
“We actually hit all the way around today,” Chase said. “We usually have problems hitting in the beginning of the game but we started hitting in the beginning and went through the whole game, so that was nice.”
White’s triple, which drove in Emily Heath (three runs scored), landed at the base of the fence in left-center field. Jessica Tweedie added an RBI double for Bangor in the fourth.
White pitched a two-hitter and walked two in six innings to go to 5-1. Katy MacDonald gave up two hits in the seventh.
“I was just trying to pitch strikes I guess,” White said. “I let the infield do the work for me.”
Despite totaling just four hits, the Indians did manage to create some tough situations for the Bangor defense. Old Town loaded the bases with one out in the first thanks to a Bangor error, a walk and a Sara Jones single, but White got two strikeouts to end the inning.
Monica Hussey had the other hit for Old Town, a single in the third.
Hussey picked up the loss, giving up five hits and walking six with two strikeouts.
“She didn’t pitch as well as she can and we had some plays we didn’t make, but all in all give Bangor credit because they played better than we did tonight,” Old Town coach Mike Thurston said. “We have them two more times, so hopefully the outcome will be different.”
The Indians did complete the game’s only double play and relief pitcher Liz Bergeron closed the game with two scoreless innings.
Official opening day festivities will likely take place some time next year, Bangor High athletic director Steve Vanidestine said recently, when the entire complex is complete.
