Day, Hanscom, Murchison help Lynx win

LINCOLN – Justin Day pitched a one-hitter, striking out nine, as the Mattanawcook Academy Lynx beat the Penquis Patriots 10-0 in schoolboy baseball action Wednesday.

Dylan Hanscom doubled and singled (RBI) to pace Mattanawcook Academy, and Jason Murchison smacked a two-run home run. Brian Berry and D.J. Robinson added run-scoring doubles.

Garrett Durant singled for Penquis of Milo.

At Mansfield Stadium in Bangor, junior righthander Brian Hackett allowed only a second-inning single while striking out 10 and not issuing a walk in the five-inning win.

Hackett faced only 16 batters.

P.J. Dowe paced Bangor with two doubles and Eric Anderson and Jon Ingraham each added two singles. Each player also had an RBI. Nick Larochelle added a single and two RBIs.

At East Millinocket, Craig Cullen collected a double, two singles and drove in three runs to pace the Minutemen.

Ryan Bouchard and Tommy Manzo each added a two-run single for Stearns of Millinocket.

Nick Bishop slammed a two-run double to pace the Wolverines. Kyle and Jordan Pelkey each had a two-run single.

At Orono, Keith Nason scattered seven hits while striking out eight and not walking a batter to lead the Crusaders of Bangor by the Red Riots.

Ryan Roach and Dan Myerowitz each recorded a double and single to pace the Crusaders. Mike Tardiff and George Keefe chipped in with two singles apiece.

Travis Dunton doubled and singled for Orono and Ryan Hennigan had a run-scoring single.

At Thorndike, Mike Cotnoir tallied three singles and a double as the Eagles of China won in a slugfest.

Caleb Pelletier drove in three runs on two doubles for Foxcroft. Matt Carey hit a triple and two singles for two RBIs and Josh Pelletier had a double, a single and an RBI.

Tyler MacKenzie paced the Warriors with two singles and an RBI.

At Deer Isle, Nick Ciomei belted a two-run homer to lead the Mariners.

Will Hinckley had three singles and three RBIs for Bangor Christian; Justin Phinney and Steve Blake hit back-to-back homers to open the game and D.J. McCleary singled twice and drove in two runs.

At Howland, Blaine Clark’s squeeze bunt, which went for a base hit, broke a 1-1 tie in the three-run seventh inning and Zac Currie capped it with a run-scoring fielder’s choice.

Currie also had a single and Charlie Boulrisse pitched a four-hitter, striking out six and walking three.

Josh Ireland’s two singles and RBI and Matt Cummings’ RBI double paced Penobscot Valley of Howland and Cody Thompson hurled a three-hitter.

At Blue Hill, Christy Moon hit a game-ending grand slam to power George Stevens Academy by Piscataquis Community of Guilford.

Moon also hit a two-run homer to back winning pitcher Rachael Wardwell, who allowed only one hit while striking out four and walking two.

Amanda Keyte notched an RBI single for the Pirates.

Sarah Colbath stroked four singles for Penobscot Valley, while Tiffany Brown hit two doubles and a single and Nancy Hallett posted three singles. Jennifer Plourde tripled and doubled, Ashley Dawson doubled and singled and Kacy Foster singled twice.

Shelby Pickering led Lee Academy with a triple, two doubles and a single. Ashlee Gifford singled three times and Kerri Harris added two singles.

At Lincoln, Ashley McMahon slammed an RBI double in the eighth inning that proved to be the game-winning hit for the Patriots.

Ashley Pelletier and Heather Anthony provided RBI singles for insurance in the same inning for Milo-based Penquis. McMahon added two singles and Michelle Mulherin had two singles.

Chelsea Nicastro and Arrika Knights each had two singles for the Lynx.

Schenck’s Melissa Rideout was the hard-luck losing pitcher as she also scattered eight hits while striking out four and walking two. Ashley Peabody notched three singles and drove in a run.

At Orono, Meaghan Brown gave up only two hits in five innings while striking out two and walking one for the Crusaders of Bangor.

Kim Cushman hit a grand slam and singled for the winners. Gwen Carter chipped in with two singles, a double and three RBIs and Rachel Stearns added two singles and an RBI. Meaghan Brown also singled twice.

Emily Balaban and Whitney Dwyer each singled for Orono.

Holland and Nikki Tuttle each singled twice.

Randi Kennedy led the game off with a home run and later tripled for three RBIs.
