SKOWHEGAN – The driver of a pickup truck involved in an alcohol-related double fatality in 2001 is back in jail.

Chad Nason, 37, was taken into custody Monday for violating his bail conditions, which stem from a second drunken-driving charge last February.

Somerset County District Attorney Evert Fowle said Wednesday that firearms and marijuana were discovered at Nason’s Cornville home during a routine spot check.

Fowle said new charges of violation of conditions of release were lodged Wednesday morning in Skowhegan District Court.

Nason’s bail was set at $50,000 surety or $10,000 cash. He remained in jail late Wednesday, unable to post bail.

Fowle also filed a motion to revoke Nason’s bail, which will be heard May 24 in Somerset County Superior Court.

Less than a month ago, Nason appeared in Superior Court to face his second charge of operating while under the influence of intoxicants. His first charge came in August 2001 after he was found to be the driver of a pickup truck that crashed on Route 2 in Skowhegan.

All three men in Nason’s truck were ejected after it struck a utility pole. The two men who died were Devin Whittemore, 36, of Madison and Jamie Arch, 34, of Skowhegan. Two white crosses adorned with flowers still mark the spot of the crash.

Nason suffered serious head and chest injuries in the crash.
