Francis, Maloney lift Shead by Calais in 8th

CALAIS – Jason Francis’ one-out double in the top of the eighth scored Derek Maloney from second to give the Shead Tigers a 2-1 high school baseball victory over the Calais Blue Devils Wednesday.

Maloney, who singled and stole second in the eighth, also pitched a three-hitter and walked just one batter for the Tigers of Eastport.

Scott Macdonald’s RBI single with two outs in the sixth provided the Calais run. Scott Geel took the loss despite pitching a three-hitter as well.

At Machias, Don Phelps singled twice and drove in two runs as the Dragons won in five innings.

Adam Hunt and Craig Moody chipped in with RBI singles for the winners.

At Thorndike, Mike Cotnoir tallied three singles and a double as the Eagles of China won in a slugfest.

Mike Burnett hit a three-run homer for Piscataquis Community High School of Guilford.

At Deer Isle, Nick Ciomei belted a two-run homer and Jeff Douglass singled twice to pace Deer Isle-Stonington past Bangor Christian.

Will Hinckley had three singles and three RBIs for Bangor Christian; Justin Phinney and Steve Blake hit back-to-back homers to open the game and D.J. McCleary singled twice and drove in two runs.

At Blue Hill, Christy Moon hit a game-ending grand slam to power George Stevens Academy by Piscataquis Community of Guilford.

Moon also hit a two-run homer to back winning pitcher Rachael Wardwell, who allowed only one hit while striking out four and walking two.

Liz Tyler chipped in with a double, single and three RBIs and Hilary Thibodeau and Chelsea Duddy each added two singles for GSA. Thibodeau also had two RBIs.

Amanda Keyte notched an RBI single for the Pirates.

Randi Kennedy led the game off with a home run and later tripled for three RBIs.
