BANGOR – To mark Cover the Uninsured Week, Penquis Community Action Program will hold a series of events 9 a.m.-3 p.m. in May to provide information and application assistance for MaineCare, the state’s no or low-cost health insurance program. Events are:

. Kick-off, giveaways and raffles, Monday May 10, Penquis CAP, 262 Harlow St.

. Information booth, Tuesday, May 11, Penobscot Community Health Center, 1012 Union St.

. Information booth, Wednesday, May 12, St. Joseph Hospital, 360 Broadway.

. Information booth, Penobscot Community Health Center Health Fair, Friday, May 14, 1012 Union St.

MaineCare enables families with children and teens to get coverage for doctor’s visits, hospitalizations, prescriptions and other benefits. The Penquis CAP Covering Kids and Families Campaign, funded by The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Maine Department of Human Services, offers these events to inform as many as possible about the program. BANGOR – Eastern Maine Medical Center recently honored volunteers who have given more than 3,000 hours of service to the hospital.

Helen Burns of Bangor is a mainstay of the EMMC information desk and helps people find their destinations within the hospital.

Virginia Olsen of Brewer offers comfort to families in the critical unit waiting area. For 25 years she has given a shoulder to lean on to those who need it.

Joanne Tracey of Bangor has welcomed visitors to EMMC for 16 years. She is stationed at the information desk.

Hannah Allen of Bangor is a designated “pinch hitter,” doing whatever needs to be done. She has volunteered 5,000 hours.

Trudy and Harold Bragg of Bangor have logged 5,000 hours of volunteer time. She helps out at the information desk. Harold delivers mail two days a week and has recently hit the 8,000 hours mark for volunteer time.

Rheta Jameson of Bangor is a volunteer of all trades. She helps out on the information desk, knits caps for babies in the neonatal unit and donates books to a lending library for EMMC patients. She has volunteered more than 5,000.

Doug Grant of Bangor keeps going and going. He collates papers, visits patients, does errands or helps with data entry, accruing more than 7,000 hours.

James Beers of Brewer is a Hercules of volunteering with 11,000 hours to his credit. He is the mainstay of EMMC’s education and training center where he serves as an assistant.
