Mainer Ellis Paul to perform in Brewer

BREWER – Maine native Ellis Paul will make a return visit to the Brewer Middle School stage in a concert to benefit Brewer Youth Theatre at 8 p.m. Saturday, May 8.

Paul, a well-known voice on the acoustic music scene, recently released an album with longtime friend Vance Gilbert. Their collaboration, “Side of the Road,” has drawn rave reviews.

The Boston Globe said the duet CD “… will surprise many with its gentle topicality and folk-pretty sound.” The album is the follow-up to Paul’s highly regarded solo effort, “The Speed of Trees,” released in 2002.

Paul’s songs have been heard by millions thanks to the movie-making Farrelly Brothers, who included his performances in their films “Shallow Hal” and “Me, Myself and Irene.” His songs also were featured on the NBC television series “Ed.”

At last spring’s appearance at Brewer Middle School, Paul wowed longtime fans and newcomers with his engaging stage presence and soulful sound.

Maine’s Kate Schrock will open the show. She has garnered acclaim for her self-produced albums over the last several years, including “Indiana,” her most recent release. Schrock’s piano and vocal work has drawn comparisons to Sarah McLachlan, Tori Amos and Joni Mitchell. She will be joined by Canadian punk and blues artist Dave Rave as they team up for what they call Broke Down Soul Review.

Tickets for Ellis Paul with special guests Kate Schrock and Dave Rave are $15 and are available at Brewer Middle School and The Grasshopper Shop in Bangor. Call the school at 989-8640 to obtain more information.
