GREENVILLE – Local veterans have a full schedule in May that includes a heartfelt thanks and special tribute to area World War II veterans on May 22 and participation in Memorial Day ceremonies.

Cecil R. Cole Post 94 members have invited World War II veterans to a luncheon at 11:30 a.m. May 22, where their sacrifices will be remembered during remarks made by local and state dignitaries, Pete Johnson of the local post told Greenville selectmen on Wednesday.

Johnson said the dinner is by reservation only and is free to World Ware II veterans and their spouses. The community is also welcome to attend the dinner at a cost of $7 per person.

Reservations must be made no later than May 15 by calling Johnson at 695-2019, Bump Morrison at 695-3311 or Vern Smith at 695-2992.

Johnson received the approval of selectmen for the Legion to display yellow ribbons throughout the community in support of the troops stationed in Iraq. Blue Star banners have been presented by the post to families that have members serving on active duty.

On June 14, the U.S. Army’s 229th birthday, the local chapter will conducts it annual disposal of unserviceable flags. Anyone who has a torn or faded flag can take it Monday through Friday to the American Legion Hall or present it to any of the Legion members who are out in the community selling the club’s annual raffle tickets. The ceremony will be open to the public.

The week of May 17, post members will place more than 400 American flags at the graves of veterans in Greenville, Shirley and Rockwood. Any family members who notice a veteran’s grave without a flag after May 24 should contact Johnson or Morrison.
