Former firefighter charged with arson

BANGOR – For the second time in a month, state fire investigators on Friday charged an 18-year-old firefighter with arson in connection with fires in Hudson.

Charles Lawrence, a former Hudson firefighter, met with investigators from the state Fire Marshal’s Office, and after interviewing him, authorities arrested Lawrence, charging him with setting the Oct. 13, 2003, fire that destroyed a vacant farm on the Hudson Road in Hudson, Sgt. Stu Jacobs of the Fire Marshal’s Office said.

One month earlier, authorities summoned Lawrence for arson in connection with the fire that destroyed a camp on the Old County Road days earlier.

Jacobs couldn’t say much about the investigation, except that it intensified after the Old County Road fire when investigators began focusing on the facts and circumstances about a number of fires in the area.

Jacobs said that the investigation did uncover information connecting Lawrence with other fires and that that information has been forwarded to the Penobscot County District Attorney’s Office for review for possible additional charges.

Authorities took Lawrence to Penobscot County Jail on Friday afternoon. He was later released on a bail of $40.
