A Massachusetts man was arrested on multiple charges Friday evening after he allegedly threatened a woman in the Bangor Mall parking lot and took her purse.
Bangor police Lt. Mark Hathaway said police learned of the robbery at about 6:30 p.m. Officer Larry Morrill, on patrol nearby, met with the woman who said the robber had menaced her with what appeared to be a knife.
Dispatch broadcast a description of the robber’s vehicle. Hathaway said the car was spotted and pulled over within 10 minutes near the intersection of State Street and Broadway. Officers Wade Betters, Steve Jordan, James Dearing and Chris Desmond made the stop. They found property in the car matching that described by the alleged robbery victim, Hathaway said.
The driver, Joel MacKinnon, 38, of Merrimac, Mass., was arrested and charged with robbery, operating under the influence, operating after suspension, and operating a stolen motor vehicle. The 1995 Plymouth had been reported stolen two days earlier in Massachusetts.
The alleged victim was not injured, Hathaway said, adding that “this is a highly unusual event. The officers did an exceptional job apprehending him in such a short time.”
Bangor police arrested a woman after she allegedly attacked her boyfriend Thursday evening.
Officer Kerry Libby reported that at about 7:20 p.m. she and Officer Larry Morrill were called to Husson College for a report of a man and woman fighting.
While they were en route, the man involved flagged them down on Kenduskeag Avenue. Morrill spoke with him, while Libby drove on and met with Shi-Juan Lin, who was sitting in her Chevrolet Malibu at a rest stop down the road. Lin told Libby that she and her boyfriend were just arguing. Libby asked Lin about a bruise on her arm and a cut on her hand; Lin said the cut was from a fall she took earlier.
Morrill reported that Lin’s boyfriend told him Lin had followed him to a friend’s house and started arguing with him outside. She hit him in the head, he said, and pushed him down, then got on top of him. The man told Morrill he punched Lin in the arm and pushed her to free himself. He then agreed to drive around with her to calm her, he said, but her driving was erratic and she kept hitting him. She stopped the car when he called 911.
Libby said the boyfriend’s shirt was stretched around the neck, and had blood on it. The officers decided to arrest Lin for domestic assault, and took her to Penobscot County Jail. Lin let her boyfriend have the car so he could care for their infant child, who was present during the incident.
An Orrington man was charged after he allegedly tried to take part in a friend’s quarrel Thursday night.
Orono police Officer Andrew Whitehouse reported that at about 11:20 p.m. he was called to a Timberview Drive apartment for an assault complaint.
A man and woman there said that while they were having an argument earlier, Peter Kopteros, 40, of Orrington called on the telephone and offered to pick the man up. The man declined Kopteros’ offer.
The couple said Kopteros later arrived at their door. They told him they didn’t need his help. Kopteros then allegedly started beating on the door and windows, Whitehouse said. A 2-year-old and a 4-month-old were in the house, and the woman went outside and confronted Kopteros.
Kopteros allegedly threatened to kill the woman, and, in a scuffle with her, elbowed her in the arm and the shoulder. Kopteros then left, backing his vehicle into a parked car on the way out, Whitehouse said.
Whitehouse notified area police agencies to keep an eye out for Kopteros, who will be charged with assault, criminal threatening, leaving the scene of a property damage accident, and failing to report an accident by the quickest means.
