Bangor visitors bureau to hold annual dinner

BANGOR – The Greater Bangor Convention and Visitors Bureau will hold the ninth annual Tourism Awards Dinner and Silent Auction during National Tourism Week at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 12, at Bangor Raceway.

This year’s winner of the Eagle Award will be presented to the Bangor Garden Show and Judith S. Perkins. The Garden Show is being honored for its contributions to the local economy for the past 14 years. It began in 1990 with a $2,000 grant. It averages 13,000 visitors a year and has an economic impact of $1.3 million. It boasts elaborate landscape displays, 70 vendors, a children’s room, an army of volunteers and popular lectures.

Perkins, executive director of Keep Bangor Beautiful, will be given the Individual Achievement Eagle Award for her commitment to fostering economic development through tourism in greater Bangor. She spearheaded the creation of the city’s first garden show. She also developed a seminar series to improve retail and hospitality service in Bangor and wrote and received a state grant for Bangor’s first Meeting Planner’s Guide.

Perkins also has done promotional and marketing work for several local companies. Before becoming the director of Keep Bangor Beautiful, she received the Bangor Garden Show’s outstanding volunteer award.
