As a board member of Eastern Agency on Aging, I was very interested to read the article, “New meal service targets elderly, disabled” (BDN, April 27). Please allow me to share a few facts about the Meals for Me program with your readers.

Meals for Me, the nutrition program of Eastern Agency on Aging, provides hot noontime meals to anyone 60 and older. Meals are served in 13 Hancock County dining rooms and delivered to homebound seniors who would otherwise not have a nutritious meal.

Last year 36,706 meals were served to 848 Hancock County seniors. Meals for Me does not ask about income or assets. As a volunteer for many years, I served meals to people in a wide variety of income levels. I have never seen anyone turned away because his or her income is too high. There is no charge for Meals for Me, but donations are accepted.

I have seen the positive impact Meals for Me has had on the lives of Hancock County seniors. I have been impressed with the agency’s willingness to collaborate with other organizations to enhance our mission to serve older people.
