Brewer Girl Scout troop headed to Big Apple

BREWER – Brewer Troop 120 is now a Junior Girl Scout troop with girls ranging from 9 to 11 years old. The girls began as Brownie Scouts and have become Junior Girl Scouts.

Currently there are 15 girls who have been saving their money to go on a trip.

They took some of the proceeds the year before to go to the Boston Museum of Science Girl Scout Sleepover.

They also have done several things for the community with their earnings, from helping clean up Doyle Field to donating several turkeys every year to Manna to buying gifts annually for the Angel Tree.

The girls are very generous when it comes to helping out and are hard workers. They love getting out into the community even if it is to take a stroll. On one such trip they went walking through Brewer to all the land sites to learn the history.

Members of Troop 120 have earned $4,000 to go to New York through annual cookie and magazine sales over five years.

The group plans to go to New York City June 11-13 this year. Because of the time frame in which the trip has to be taken, the costs are more than expected.

The girls will do two fund-raisers to help them earn the remaining $1,200 needed for the trip. One is a bottle drive in Brewer on Sunday, May 15. JR Redemption Center will be the drop off location from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The girls will hold a car wash 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, May 22, at Tire Warehouse, 589 Wilson St., Brewer. The car wash is free, but the Scouts will accept donations. They also will accept cans and bottles that day.

The Girl Scouts chose New York City as their destination because they were all affected by the tragic events of Sept. 11, 2001. They want to visit Ground Zero and the Statue of Liberty. The trip will help the Scouts achieve some of the badges they have been working on.
