The Husson College golf team finished its 2003-04 season with a sparkling 114-6 record and a North Atlantic Conference championship.

Coach Bruce MacGregor’s Braves, who were 96-1 against NCAA Division III teams, won 12 of the 13 tournaments in which they played. However, Husson did not qualify for the NCAA Division III Men’s Golf Championship.

Skidmore College, St. Lawrence University and New York University were the three teams from the Northeast region selected to compete in the 23-team event that concluded Thursday in Beaumont, Calif.

Husson was ranked first among Division III Northeast schools and 14th in the nation while averaging only 15.71 over par per match as a team. The Braves’ scoring average was 301.4.

Corey Poulin of Jackman, who completed his collegiate eligibility last fall, was the lowest-scoring player in the country with a 71.64 average, an average of 0.21 over par. Husson’s other standouts included sophomore Ross McGee of Fairfield (4.79 vs. par), freshman Robby Picard of Vassalboro (6.20), senior Joe Finemore of Sidney (6.36), senior Lance Libby of Oakland (7.0), freshman Heath Morang of Gardiner (7.11) and freshman Devon Raymond of Waterville (.7.75).

McGee, Finemore and Libby were All-North Atlantic Conference first-team picks, while Raymond and Picard were named to the second team.

The University of Southern Maine of Gorham (29.5 vs. par) and the University of Maine-Farmington (32.0) were ranked Nos. 7 and 8, respectively, in the region. USM sophomore Jim Frost ranked second in the region and 27th in the country at 3.08 vs. par with a 74.25 scoring average.

Eldridge plays in NCAA tourney

Blake Eldridge of Winthrop is a member of the Barton College (N.C.) team that has qualified for the NCAA Division II Men’s Golf Championship at Orlando that started Thursday.

Eldridge, the grandson of former New England Junior champion Skip Eldridge, is a junior on a Barton team ranked 14th in Division II.

Hughes in NCAA tennis tourney

Colby College’s Sara Hughes will play in the NCAA Division III Women’s Tennis Championships starting Saturday at Rhodes College in Memphis, Tenn.

Hughes, a junior, will participate in singles play. She also qualified in doubles, but only will play singles this weekend.

Hughes earned All-America status for doubles last year after being ranked ninth in the country along with playing partner Britt Palmedo.

Hughes earned NESCAC second-team honors this year after just missing out on making the championship match at the NESCAC Tournament.

Colby’s Lund to attend workshop

Bill Lund, an assistant football coach at Colby College in Waterville, is among 10 coaches selected to participate in the 2004 NCAA Expert Coaching Program.

The event, scheduled June 1-3 in Indianapolis, is a collaborative effort between the NCAA, the Black Coaches Association, the American Football Coaches Association and the National Football League. It is designed to address the shortage of ethnic minority head football coaches at NCAA institutions.

Lund, who is Latino, has spent four seasons as a linebackers coach and special teams coordinator at Colby, where he also is an assistant track and field coach. Lund also spent three years as a football assistant at Saint Anselm College.

The Wisconsin native is a graduate of Lawrence University in Appleton, Wis.
