ABBOT – Members of the Abbot Evangelical Free Church thought they had done everything possible three years ago to accommodate their growing congregation.

They ripped out walls to expand the sanctuary. They used the kitchen for seating during Sunday morning services. Parishioners who arrived late had to sit out of sight of the pulpit and listen to the sermon through a speaker system.

With all options for expansion inside exhausted, members looked outward. First, they convinced a nearby landowner to sell them some property and then set to work constructing an addition that doubled the size of the church.

The addition expanded the sanctuary to allow seating for 350 to 400 people and provided seven classrooms, including two large rooms, in the basement. A new sound system, new lighting and carpeting were included.

No bank loan was needed because materials were bought using the weekly offerings, and much of the labor was donated by members, said Pastor Ray Beless this week.

“This was built using sacrificial giving and a lot of labor given in love,” Beless said.

That labor of love will be celebrated this weekend with special activities. From noon to 3 p.m. today, the church plans activities for children, refreshments, building tours and displays. A historical presentation will be given at 6:30 p.m.

At 10:30 a.m. Sunday, May 16, a dedication service is planned, followed by refreshments and fellowship. The public is invited.
