BAR HARBOR – Hancock County rivals Ellsworth and Mount Desert Island had to wait patiently before either of their respective boys teams could drive off into the foggy Friday night with county bragging rights and a trophy.

When it was all said and done, the Eagles got to head down Route 3 with that trophy. Led by distance trio Joey DeWitt, Corey DeWitt and Kris Tracy, who amassed 54 meet points along with sprinter Herbie Ryan, who racked up 40 by winning four events, Ellsworth captured the Hancock County track and field title.

The Eagles edged the Trojans 208-198 on a chilly, foggy night at the high school track. Bucksport wound up third, followed by George Stevens of Blue Hill and Sumner of East Sullivan with 49 each.

Coach Ian Braun’s MDI girls dominated, outdistancing the runner-up GSA Eagles 208-119 to win the girls title. Ellsworth took third with 70, the Golden Bucks had 60, Searsport 50 and the Tigers 47.

In the boys’ meet, senior Joey DeWitt won two races for the Eagles. He took the 1,600 in 4 minutes, 30 seconds, the 800 in 2:01 and anchored Ellsworth’s winning 4×400 relay team. His brother, freshman Corey, was second in the 1,600 and 3,200 and also ran on the 4×400 team, as did Tracy. Tracy also took second in the 800 and anchored the Eagles’ winning 4×800 team.

After not training much due to basketball season, Joey DeWitt is nearing top shape.

“I’m just starting to pick up my mileage now, but basketball’s fun and it’s a nice break from running,” he said with a chuckle.

Coach Andy Beardsley’s team was missing one key piece to its puzzle, but his boys were still successful.

“We knew they [the distance team] were going to have to produce today, because Lucas Carriere didn’t run today,” he said. “We had good efforts from all the guys.”

Carriere, a 100-200-400 specialist, is nursing a quadriceps injury.

“We can definitely compete in PVC’s,” Joey DeWitt added.

“Brewer and Old Town are both very strong, so it will be tough,” said Beardsley.

Ryan captured both hurdle races as well as the triple jump and discus for the Eagles. The Trojans’ Brad Witham took both the 100 and 200 while Nick Tymozcko of Bucksport won the 400.

Sumner senior Ryan O’Keefe edged the younger DeWitt to win the 3,200 and finished fourth in the 1,600.

In the girls meet, MDI’s numbers were way too much for the smaller GSA Eagles.

The Trojans’ Emily Farley and Amanda Ohmeis went 2-4 in the 3,200 and Taylor Kelly took the 1,600 to head up the distance crew.

“We have a real good group of senior leaders and a strong group of sophomore girls,” Braun said as his girls celebrated. “They work their butts off in practice and in meets.”

Improvements are key at the end of the season, as championship league and state meets are just two weeks away, and MDI is showing off its progress.

“We improved in a lot of the races,” Braun said. “We’ll be in the pack at PVC’s, and we’ll do the best we possibly can.”

Other Trojan standouts included sprinters Aimee Brooks and Sarah March. March cruised to a win in the 100 while Brooks backed her up in winning the 200 and 400. Marya Spurling, Bekka Paine and Katy Klaver went 2-3-5 in the 800. Paine also captured the long jump.

Searsport’s Nori Francis-Mezger won both the pole vault and discus while another Viking, Sandra Klausmeyer, took the shot put and javelin.
