Cake wins Sugarloaf Marathon

KINGFIELD – Judson Cake of Bar Harbor, a former distance runner at the University of Maine, breezed to victory Sunday morning in the annual Sugarloaf Marathon.

Cake, 28, covered the 26.2-mile distance from Cathedral Pines Campground in Eustis to the finish line in downtown Kingfield in 2 hours, 31 minutes, 26.8 seconds, or a pace of 5:46 per mile.

Cake won the race by nearly 12 minutes over second-place finisher Jeff Jones of Farmington (2:43:01.8), with Robin Pendoley of Cambridge, Mass. (2:45:32.7), David Principe of Cranston, R.I. (2:46:47.3) and Mark Goettel of Cumberland (2:52:22.9) completing the top five.

Becky Flowers of Leominster, Mass., was the top women’s finisher, placing 32nd overall in 3:14:44.5.

In the Sugarloaf 15K, Ethan Hemphill of Freeport finished in 47:42.3 to finish first overall while Susannah Beck of Harborside was finished third overall and was the first women’s finisher in 53:21.8.

Old Town High School sophomore running standout Cassie Hintz was the third women’s finisher and placed 14th overall in 57:41.

Rounding out the top five men’s finishers after Hemphill were: Evan Graves of Bar Harbor (48:01.5), Newell Lewey of Bradley (54:13.6), Matt Woida of Bar Harbor (54:29.1) and Charlie Humphries of North Yarmouth (54:30.7).

Trailing Beck in the women’s division were: Jenna Richardson of China (55:07.3), Hintz, Ellie Tucker of North Yarmouth (59:18.5), and Kathleen Bell of Orono (1:01:03).
