Pittsfield council OKs road improvements

PITTSFIELD – Pittsfield councilors cleared the way on Tuesday night for major improvements to take place in 2005 on Phillips Corner Road.

The road is a state collector road, and the Maine Department of Transportation is planning to reconstruct more than 3 miles of the road, beginning at box 3082 and ending at box 3040. Pittsfield’s share of the $215,250 project will be $78,200.

In addition, by approving a local share, the entire road will get a thin coat of pavement referred to as “a skinny mix” this summer, Town Manager Kathryn Ruth said.

Ruth said that the Route 2 end of the road is by far the worst section, but MDOT wanted to get the biggest bang for its buck by working on the center section of the roadway first.

“The tail end of this road is in very bad shape,” Mayor Peter “Andi” Vigue said. “But this is a step in the right direction.”

In other business, the council:

. Approved a tax anticipation note up to $450,000.

. Approve a work order change that rehabilitated the beacon at the Pittsfield Municipal Airport.

. Authorized $9,700 as the local match for $97,275 worth of lighting equipment at the airport – specifically an approach path indicator – paid for by the Federal Aviation Administration.

. Awarded the 2004 paving program contract for six streets to Pike Industries of Fairfield for $101,235.

. Agreed to work cooperatively to provide some of the recently donated skateboard park equipment to the town of Newport, which is creating a small park adjacent to its community center.

. Approved new building code revisions and a land purchase installment.
