Summer swim team

BANGOR – The Bangor YMCA and Bangor-Brewer YWCA Barracudas Swim Team is now accepting registrations for the Barracudas Summer Swim Team, a three-month season beginning June 14 and ending Aug. 20, for youth ages 6 through 18. All practices will be held at the YWCA Aloupis Pool. A YMCA membership is required, and a complimentary YWCA membership will be provided.

Practice times will be 4:30-6:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, with some variation within that time slot according to age and skill level. The program puts special emphasis on the 10 and under age group, which is showing significant development and results.

Program costs vary depending upon level of competition, and monthly bank drafts are offered. Financial assistance is available to those who qualify. Those youth who are not sure about joining the summer team can try practicing with the Barracudas free of charge for one week.

Erika Haley was recently appointed head swim coach of the Barracudas Swim Team. Haley has taught swim lessons at the YWCA for the past six years and also teaches lifeguard and water aerobics classes. She began competitive swimming at the age of 10 with the Barracudas and continued to swim through her four years at Bangor High School. Previously, she was the assistant coach for the Hurricane Swim Club.

Elizabeth Smith, a swim instructor at the YMCA, will assist Haley throughout the Spring Swim Clinic. Smith is the assistant coach of the YMCA-YWCA Barracudas Swim Team and has been teaching and directing children’s swim programs for more than 15 years. She swam at Oklahoma State University and is currently a member of the USA Masters Swim Team.
