The recent revelations of torture and abuse in Iraq are the absolute last straw. The last flimsy excuse for our adventuring into Iraq was the fiction that we are “liberating the Iraqi people,” from a cruel and despotic regime. We have met the enemy and it is ourselves.
One by one all the other trumped-up reasons for taking over Iraq have been exposed as lies. And now this. Our tax dollars at work.
I’d just as soon send my money to Halliburton and leave the poor Iraqi people “out of the loop.”
The effect of seeing the photos from the Abu Ghraib prison prompted me to call all four of my senators and representatives to demand that they get up on their hind-legs and do their jobs. They should be demanding some accountability from the war profiteers that have crafted this horrendous mess.
Those responsible in Washington should be losing their jobs – not at the next election – but right now. Donald Rumsfeld, Condoleezza Rice and Paul Wolfowitz, who, can’t remember the number of American servicemen and women who have died, but can reel off all the statistics on how much oil has been pumped, could be pumped, and how many dollars it will bring in.
The judicial branch of our government is busy shredding the Bill of Rights, the executive branch is in the hands of non-elected, radical extremists and all we have left is the legislative branch to appeal to for some justice and sanity.
If enough of us call, write and put pressure on them, it will make them bold enough to demand accountability, not just from the troops in the photographs, but for the architects of this disaster. I think that the American people are tired of being lied to and fobbed off with lame excuses for the failed policies of a bunch of war criminals that are running this country into the ground.
