EAST MILLINOCKET – Residents at Tuesday’s annual town meeting approved $300,000 to be raised in capital expenditures for area improvements.
An overall municipal budget of $2.9 million was approved at the meeting. A proposed school budget of $4.1 million was amended, with $78,975 to be cut from the administration’s funds.
Judy Davis, administrative assistant to the superintendent, said the school board would meet Wednesday to determine where cuts would be made in the budget.
“It was a good town meeting; it went well,” administrative assistant Shirley Tapley said Thursday. “Lots of good discussion.”
The meeting began at 6 p.m. and was adjourned at 10:08 p.m., Tapley said.
The amount to be raised locally for the capital expenditures includes $70,000 for the town’s pool, $60,000 for a new firetruck, $15,000 for a new thermal-imaging camera, $55,000 for renovations to the public safety building, $31,000 to replace a portion of the Spring Street sewer, $27,000 to replace a portion of the sidewalks on Main Street, and $30,200 for computer system upgrades.
The Millinocket Area Growth and Investment Council asked for $25,000 from the town. That amount was amended to $20,000.
Mark Scally, Richard Stratton and David MacLeod were all sworn in as new selectmen. Stratton will fill the position left by former Board of Selectman Chairman Clint Lincscott, who resigned in March.
Stratton received 133 votes, beating out Belinda Hobbs, who had 95 votes.
MacLeod and Scally both received 132 votes, beating out Anthony Chaverie, with 43 votes, and incumbent James Jamo, with 116 votes, for the two remaining selectman spots. Teresa Hoxie is vacating the second seat.
Frederick Moore and John MacLeod were sworn in as new school board members. Moore received 187 votes, and John MacLeod received 208 votes. Both ran unopposed.
Eighteen percent of registered voters turned out for the elections, which were held Monday.
