Mount Desert Island High School has filled its varsity girls basketball coaching vacancy.
MDI athletic director Bunky Dow confirmed that Chip Taylor of Surry was unanimously approved to succeed David Tims as head coach by a 10-0 school board vote.
Taylor, a business teacher at the high school who has been the JV boys basketball coach the last three years, was an assistant coach for Lawrence High boys coach Mike McGee in Fairfield for three years prior to moving to MDI.
“He’s in-house and he knows the system and the community expectations,” said Dow. “He’s not only a teacher in the classroom, but on the court as well. He’s well-respected and well-liked by the kids.”
Dow still has to fill MDI’s vacant varsity girls soccer coaching position. Former coach Emily Ellis resigned due to pregnancy. Dow hopes to fill the position by the next board meeting on June 14.
