BALTIMORE, Md. – Chelsea’s Greg Creek and Bucksport’s Pete Saunders helped lead the offense while Camden’s Mike MacDonald and Troy Martin took care of things on the mound. The result was a baseball doubleheader sweep for Maine as the Black Bears downed the University of Maryland Baltimore County 6-2 and 9-1 Friday.

Maine is now 31-19 overall and 13-7 in America East conference play. UMBC is 14-37.

In the first game, Creek provided all the runs MacDonald would need with a three-run homer in the first. MacDonald, meanwhile, allowed four hits and two runs – one earned – while striking out five and walking none in seven innings of work. Greg Norton mopped up with two innings of relief.

Brewer’s Joel Barrett doubled and hit a solo homer to drive in two runs. Simon Williams of Portland and Ryan Quintal each singled twice.

Mike Orlando had a two-run single for UMBC.

In the second game, Joe Hough led the way for Maine with a double, a two-run homer, and a single. Saunders hit a three-run double to break things open in the sixth. Barrett, Aaron Izaryk and Matt McGraw each had two hits. Martin allowed three hits and one run in the seven-inning contest.

Kyle Wildasin’s solo home run provided the lone run for the Retrievers.
