BANGOR – Mattanawcook Academy of Lincoln senior righthander Wayne Berry said he loves pitching at Bangor’s Mansfield Stadium.

The Lee Academy Pandas found that out the hard way Friday night.

Berry allowed just one unearned run and struck out 14 in a route-going performance and senior right fielder Tyler Gardner drove in three runs as the Lynx improved to 14-0 with a 15-1 win over Lee.

The 10-run rule was waived by the coaches.

The Pandas are now 12-3 with two of those losses coming to the Lynx. MA triumphed 10-0 earlier.

“He’s the best pitcher we’ve faced this year,” said Lee Academy coach Randy Harris. “We struck out only 43 times in our 14 games before tonight.”

“He mixed his pitches up well. He had a good fastball and a live curve. And he was right around the strike zone,” said Lee Academy sophomore shortstop Tyler Thompson.

Berry didn’t walk anybody and threw 72 strikes among his 107 pitches.

“This was the best I’ve thrown all year,” said Berry. “I felt good out there. My fastball and curve were both working.”

Berry also said he changed speeds to keep their hitters off balance.

The Lynx had nine hits and also benefited from seven Lee Academy errors, 12 walks and six wild pitches.

“We’ve played poorly twice and both have come against Mattanawcook. But I don’t want to take anything away from them. They’re a quality team,” said Harris.

The Lynx supplied the grateful Berry with a four-run cushion in the first inning at the expense of losing pitcher Nate Dow.

Dylan Hanscom walked, stole second and went to third when brother Dustin grounded a single to left. Dustin alertly hustled into second and Gardner ripped a two-run single to center.

“I knew he’d be coming with a fastball. It was right down the middle, a little high, and that’s where I like them,” said Gardner, who raced all the way to third when the ball went under the glove of center fielder Andrew Stevens.

Gardner scored on a wild pitch and Jason Murchison lined an opposite-field triple to right. A walk later, Dow was replaced by Gerry Worster and Brian Berry greeted him with a run-scoring single to left.

Gardner explained that they have scored a lot of runs early in games this season.

“Lee is a big rival. It’s always fun to beat them,” said Gardner.

A walk, Gardner’s RBI triple down the right field line and a wild pitch made it 6-0 in the second.

Mattanawcook put the game away with a run in the third, two more in the fourth and three in the fifth.

Gardner tripled and singled for his three RBIs and Murchison tripled and doubled and drove in a run. Each scored three times.

Blaine Clark had a pair of singles for the Pandas and he delivered the only run in the seventh inning. Thompson had the only other hit, a single.
