ORONO – Brewer High School senior Chris Fox described what the Phi Mu Delta Relay Carnival is all about in four simple words: “It’s a fun meet.”

While teams were waiting for results to be compiled, they put the University of Maine’s Morse Field to good use with an old-fashioned post-meet limbo competition.

Good thing all the events were done.

When this “fun meet” was finally over, the Old Town girls and Brewer boys got to drive away with traveling trophies.

The Witches upended the Indians 116-97 for the boys title. Mount Desert Island finished third with 67.50, Hampden was fourth with 64, and Presque Isle’s 53 rounded out the top five.

Old Town topped a tough John Bapst of Bangor team to capture the girls meet, 113-93. Caribou was third with 66, the MDI Trojans next at 48.50, and the Hampden Broncos rounded out the top five with 46.

In the girls meet, the lone meet record that was set was by John Bapst standout Katie Andrle in the 300 hurdles. Andrle’s 47-second performance broke the record previously held by Hampden’s Mackenzie Rawcliffe.

“It was great; that’s my best time this year so far and I’m excited,” said Andrle. “I only got under 48 in states last year.”

Andrle was one of many athletes who enjoyed the change from the typical track meet.

“It’s very exciting to compete against tough athletes and with good competition,” she said.

Even though the Crusaders finished second to Old Town, Andrle and her teammates were satisfied with their performance.

“We ran well as a team, and that’s what we emphasize,” she said.

Andrle also anchored Bapst’s winning 4×400 relay team, which has a secret to success: having the same spikes.

“At the beginning of the year, we decided that we should probably get team spikes, because it looks cool,” Andrle said with a chuckle.

Her teammates on that relay were Erica Dougherty, Elaine Colwell, and Lily Krichels. Colwell also won the open 100 hurdles race while the Crusaders won both the distance medley and 4×800 relays.

The Indians, meanwhile, proved just too much for Bapst in winning by a slim margin of 20 points. Old Town coach Rod White agreed that the relay meet was a nice change from regular meets.

“It’s a good break between regular season and championships,” he said. “It was tough today to compete in field events because of the weather.”

Sophomore distance standout Cassie Hintz won the 1,600 run in 5 minutes, 12 seconds and anchored the Indians’ distance medley team. The pole vault team of Heather Jackson, Heather Vicary and Samantha Tardiff tied for first with Brewer at 11 feet.

Old Town’s Michelle Goulette was on both the winning long and triple jump teams along with Amy McLaughlin. Hannah Marquis took part in both the triple jump and javelin teams.

“Competition is the best thing,” White said of the meet.

In the boys meet, Brewer senior Dan Peterson joined Andrle in breaking the meet’s 300 hurdles record. Peterson’s time of 41.04 was nearly two seconds faster than the time classmate Josh Hawkes set last year (42.85).

“I came into today knowing I needed to run faster to get ready for PVCs and get a feel of what I should run then,” Peterson said.

Peterson’s Witches also received a boost from a freshman.

“Kyle Allcroft stepped up in the 4-by-100 and ran fast in the 200,” Peterson said. “We have some injuries, but we’ll deal with them.”

Fox, who helped Brewer to second-place finishes in the 4×100 and 4×200 relays, wants his team to be ready for the upcoming PVC and state championships.

“We’ll take it easy this week and let the injuries calm down,” he said.

Brewer’s 4×800 team of Peter McGuire, Brendan Carr, David Haluska, and John Snow captured first while Snow was third in the open 1,600. That race was won by Presque Isle senior Chris Blackistone (4:39.64).

Peterson also anchored Brewer’s winning 4×70 shuttle hurdle team. He was joined by Hawkes, Tyler Stewart, and Tony Schwarze, while the “B” team was second.

Brad Witham of MDI set another meet record in the open 200 with a 23.78. Old Town won both the 4×100 and 4×200 relays.

“The 4-by-1[00] had one of their best times of the year,” White said. That team was made up of Andy Wood, Jake Fogarty, Andrwe Reinzo, and Matt Petrie. Reinzo, Petrie, and Wood joined Tim Niles on the 4×200.
