PORTLAND – Jose Diaz and Ken Chenard combined on a four-hit shutout as the Binghamton Mets beat the Portland Sea Dogs 7-0 Monday, snapping the Sea Dogs’ five-game winning streak.
Wayne Lydon belted a two-run homer and Prentice Redman also knocked in two runs for the Mets.
After two scoreless innings, Binghamton (28-17) grabbed a 2-0 lead in the third. With a runner aboard, Lydon lofted a long fly ball down the left-field line. The ball appeared to sail outside the foul pole by 10 feet but home plate umpire Jake Uhlenhopp ruled it fair.
Uhlenhopp’s hotly disputed call became a moot issue in the seventh when the Mets added two runs on four walks, a single and a groundout. Back-to-back doubles by David Wright and Redman sparked three Binghamton runs in the ninth.
The Sea Dogs (19-25) mounted their top scoring threat in the first inning, when they loaded the bases with one out.
