SKOWHEGAN – A bail revocation hearing was dismissed Monday in Somerset County Superior Court because the man involved already is in jail, Somerset-Kennebec County District Attorney Evert Fowle said.
Chad Nason, 37, of Cornville was taken into custody two weeks ago for violating his bail conditions, which stem from his second drunken-driving charge last February. Fowle said Monday that guns and marijuana were discovered at Nason’s home during a routine spot check.
Since Nason already is in jail serving his four-month sentence on the second OUI charge, it was meaningless to pursue the bail hearing, Fowle said. The prosecutor said new charges of violation of conditions of release are pending and “additional jail time will be requested.”
Earlier this spring, Nason appeared in Superior Court to face his second charge of operating while under the influence of intoxicants. His first charge came in August 2001 when he was involved in a deadly crash on Route 2 in Skowhegan involving a pickup truck registered in his name.
All three men in Nason’s truck, including Nason, were ejected after it struck a utility pole. The two men who died were Devin Whittemore, 36, of Madison and Jamie Arch, 34, of Skowhegan. Nason suffered serious head and chest injuries in the crash.
Fowle said investigators were not able to determine who was driving the vehicle when it crashed.
At the hearing in April, Nason requested a stay of execution for his four-month sentence because he was expecting a visit from his young children who live out of state.
“Don’t disappoint me,” Justice Kirk Studstrup told Nason when he granted him the stay. Nason was to report to jail on May 17 but was picked up on April 28.
