May baskets weave old, young in Bangor

BANGOR – Fourteen foster grandparents in Greater Bangor joined Head Start children at the Job Corps Head Start-Child Care Center on April 29, to share the tradition of making May baskets.

The children entertained the foster grammies with a song, then each chose a grammie and together they created a May basket. The children and grammies attached handles to the May baskets and decorated the outside with stickers.

Each child filled a May basket with Play-Doh, a slide whistle, bookmark, sticker sheet, Foster Grandparent Program brochure and a noisemaker.

At the end of the session, each child presented each grandmother with a “handprint flower.”

The event was made possible by a grant from the Bangor Wal-Mart.

Foster Grandparents are income-eligible volunteers 60 years of age and older who work 15 to 40 hours a week with disadvantaged, disabled and developmentally delayed children in schools, hospitals and Head Start centers.
