Golf vacation winner

BANGOR – John Kasten of Bangor is the winner of a golf vacation for two in Ireland from Wilson Golf.

Kasten attended a Wilson Golf Demo Day held by Golf Country on March 27 at the Maine Sports Complex in Bangor. He registered to win the random drawing for the Irish golf vacation.

Kasten, a marriage counselor who plays golf twice a week, will take his wife, Marge, on the six-day, seven-night trip, which includes airfare, lodging, golf fees and car rental.

Golf Country is located at 1129 Union St., Airport Mall, in Bangor. The store features a 400-square-foot putting area, a hitting net and two full-swing simulators for golf club custom-fitting.

Wheelchair basketball

OLD TOWN – A group of men and boys in wheelchairs have been playing basketball at the Old Town-Orono YMCA for about a month.

Sessions are held 4:30-6:30 p.m. Sundays, and more wheelchair athletes are welcome to join the group. For information, contact Gaelen at 942-6720.

Lifeguard training course

HAMPDEN – The Lura Hoit Pool is offering a lifeguard training class, Monday through Friday, June 7-18. Participants must be at least 15 years old at the completion of the course.

Upon course completion, participants passing all skills will be certified in lifeguarding, first aid and CPR for the professional rescuer. To obtain information, call the Lura Hoit Pool at 862-4305.

Orono summer sports

ORONO – The Orono Youth Football committee in conjunction with the Orono Parks and Recreation Department will hold a youth football registration night for children entering grades one-six at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 9, at the Keith Anderson Community House on Bennoch Road in Orono.

The fee of $30 for those in grades one and two and $50 for those in grades three-six includes free equipment rental. Those who register June 9 will receive a $10 discount, family discounts and free football to the first 36 to register. The recreation department is also accepting registrations for the FUNdamental Basketball School for Girls and Boys entering grades three-eight. The school, directed by Mike Corneil and Tim Pearson, is designed to teach youth the fundamentals of basketball in a fun and positive atmosphere. The school is composed of local teachers, coaches and players. All participants receive a T-shirt, video analysis of shooting, individual awards, report cards and more.

The girls’ school runs from July 12 to 16 and the boys’ school runs from July 19 to 23. Groups are split by grades. The fee is $70 per camper. Sixth-graders may participate in the morning and afternoon sessions for a fee of $120. Registrations after June 18 will be subject to a $5 late fee.

The recreation department also is accepting registrations for its summer camps, clinics and lessons. Orono offers two soccer camps, golf clinic, track club, field hockey camp, tennis lessons, softball clinic, swimming lessons, football skills camp and chess camp. New climbing gym

BANGOR – The Bangor YMCA will host a free open house for the Bangor YMCA-Epic Sports Climbing Gym 11 a.m.-1 p.m. and 4-7 p.m. Friday, June 4. The public will be able to view and try out the new space.

The new facility boasts something for all levels of climbing and houses a five-station, 20-foot-high climbing wall with 60 feet of bouldering space. An open gym schedule, staffed with proper supervision, will be announced at the open house.

Starting June 14, the beginning of the Bangor YMCA’s new program session, the climbing gym will available for group rentals, birthday parties and corporate team-building events.
