Benefit planned for family of late UCB student

After the untimely death of 28-year-old Shannon Lynne of Bangor, friends and fellow students at University College of Bangor are continuing with previous plans to hold a benefit to assist the family.

The 28-year-old died unexpectedly last week, leaving her husband, Jason Lynne and five children under age 8. Both parents were students at UCB before the mother’s death, and they recently had purchased a home.

Shannon Lynne underwent surgery and was hospitalized before her death. At that time, fellow students Christie Hesseltine and Becky Marquis decided it would be nice to try to help the family through that difficult time.

Now, of course, the benefit takes on even more meaning as the young father faces the future without his wife.

A benefit supper for the Lynne family is planned for 5:30 p.m. Friday, June 4, in the College Center Ballroom on the campus of UCB in Bangor. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for children.

“We are also asking for clothing, toys, games, food” or anything that could help the family, Hesseltine said.

Since Shannon Lynne’s death, memorial donations in her memory are being accepted for the Kids Fund, in care of Ray Thomas and Sherry Roeder, University Credit Union, 5779 Rangeley Road, Orono 04469-5779, or at University Credit Union, 977 Union St., Bangor 04401-3011.

If you have questions about how you can help the Lynne family during this great personal tragedy, call Hesseltine, 478-1868; e-mail christie.hesseltine @Maine.edu; call Marquis, 659-2260; or e-mail my2girlsiluv @msn.com.

On behalf of our community and the Junior League of Bangor, I welcome Christine Benero to the Queen City.

Last month, Benero completed her term as president of the Association of Junior Leagues International, of which the Bangor Junior League is a member.

Benero is the first association officer to visit Bangor.

The Bangor Junior League has a long and proud 72-year history, and we welcome the opportunity to inform her about the League’s work in this area.

Benero will be the guest speaker during the League’s annual meeting at 6 p.m. Tuesday, June 1, at Four Point Sheraton in Bangor.

As part of her visit, Benero will meet with present and sustaining members of the BJL, which was founded in 1932 and was officially welcomed into the international association in 1952.

During the day, Benero will be taken on guided tours of past League community projects including a visit to the Warren Center for Communication and Learning at 175 Union St., which was founded in 1961 as the Bangor Regional Speech and Hearing Center.

After a 1996 capital campaign co-chaired by Bangor Daily News Publisher Richard J. Warren and businesswoman Jean Deighan, the facility was renamed for the Warren family in 1998 in recognition of a three-generation commitment to the organization which began when Warren’s mother, Joanne J. Van Namee, was League president.

Benero also will visit the Pediatric Kitchen at Eastern Maine Medical Center and My Choice Pregnancy Resource Center at 181 State St.
