DEXTER – A Pittsfield man accused of cutting a Dexter man with a knife before holding police at bay for 10 hours made his initial court appearance Thursday in Bangor District Court.
Christopher Norris, 22, is charged with elevated aggravated assault and with creating a police standoff.
Bail was set Thursday at $250 cash bail on the aggravated assault charge. Norris also has a probation revocation out of Somerset County, according to a Penobscot County Jail official.
He hadn’t made bail as of Thursday evening.
Norris was arrested at 4:20 a.m. Thursday after the Maine State Police Tactical Team lobbed tear gas into a mobile home in Dexter where he was hiding.
Police were notified at about 6:20 p.m. Wednesday that a stabbing had occurred at a Park Street home. During an altercation, Norris allegedly cut a 37-year-old man on his upper, inner leg, according to Dexter police Chief Arthur Roy. Roy said the cut was about 4 to 6 inches long and did not require stitches.
After the altercation, Norris left the mobile home and fled into a wooded area. Tracking dogs were bought to the scene, but Norris managed to avoid them when he entered another mobile home in the vicinity, Roy said.
“He was moving from place to place,” the police chief said. The owner of the mobile home, who was familiar with Norris, let him inside, left and then called police, he said.
Roads to and from the mobile home were closed and police surrounded the area.
Because Norris reportedly was seen with a firearm the night before, the tactical team was asked to respond. A negotiator with the team tried several times during the night to coax Norris to come out of the mobile home without success, Roy said.
The standoff was ended early Thursday morning when police fired tear gas into the mobile home and forced their way inside the building to make the arrest, Roy said.
