Whether they’re at the airport or downtown, as Bangor residents, we believe that we’re very fortunate to have a fine police department. We’ll ignore the remark we heard that the department wanted to get out of a higher-crime neighborhood.

We did not contact our councilors on this issue. In retrospect, we should have, but we never thought that they would opt for the airport location, all things being considered. As an aside, we wonder what the patrol officers think of the airport location?

There is one element that we’re wondering whether the council considered in making their decision. We feel certain there will be a significant increase in “blue-light-and-siren” transits along two of the busiest streets in town – Hammond and Union streets – and through two school zones, to respond to in-town incidents.

Regardless of where the main station is located, or a sub-station in the parking garage, downtown Bangor will remain where most of the action is. The airport is off to one side. You will have to travel through a built- up area to get to almost every other built-up area in the city. It would be interesting to know how many others think as we do. Perhaps until the ink is dry on the paper, there is still time to change.
