Whitesides powers ‘Jacks to first victory Bangor 1-3 in series, visits Brockton today

LITTLE FALLS, N.J. – The Bangor Lumberjacks picked up their first win of the season and went .500 on the weekend with a 7-3 victory over New Jersey Saturday and a 4-3 loss to the Jackals on Sunday.

On Saturday, the Lumberjacks scored all the runs they would need with four in the fifth. Jake Whitesides got his first hit of the season with a two-run double to highlight the inning rally.

Righthander Matt Scheuing scattered six hits over five innings of work while notching three walks and five strikeouts for the 1-3 Lumberjacks.

Mark Burke was 4-for-5 with a solo home run and three singles. Donnie Ross and Whitesides each had a double and a single while Mike Grasso and Jose Garcia each singled twice.

Scott Goodman led the 3-1 Jackals with three singles and a stolen base.

On Sunday, Burke got the Lumberjacks off to a quick start with a two-run home run in the first inning, but the Jackals got a run back in the bottom of the inning.

A sixth-inning throwing error by Bangor’s Willie King allowed a run to score and made it 3-2 Bangor before Kevin Grijak’s RBI double tied the game.

Goodman’s solo home run off Brandon Bowe in the seventh broke the tie for good and gave New Jersey the win.

Carlos Figueroa notched the win in relief with two innings of one-hit ball and Mike Perkins got the save despite allowing one hit in the ninth.

New Jersey’s Craig Conway and Bangor’s Burke were the only multiple hitters with two apiece.

Bangor remains on the road with a three-games against Brockton (Mass.) starting today.

Sea Dogs 8, Fisher Cats 5

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Mike Campo and Brett Roneberg hit back-to-back home runs in the first inning, and Abe Alvarez took a perfect game into the sixth inning as the Portland Sea Dogs defeated the New Hampshire Fisher Cats 8-5 Sunday.

Portland opened the game with four straight hits, including Campo’s two-run homer and Roneberg’s solo shot, for a 4-0 lead. Fisher Cats starter and loser Francisco Rosario (0-2) didn’t last the inning.

The Sea Dogs added to their lead in the third inning on Eric Johnson’s run-scoring double. They pushed to 8-0 in the fifth inning as Raul Nieves, Joe Kilburg and Campo drove in runs.

Alvarez (4-4) had his perfect game broken up on Jose Umbria’s single to right. Alvarez lost his shutout on Danny Solano’s two-run double later in the inning but still picked up the win.
