Carnes helps Dexter rally by GSA Pitcher earns victory, also provides two-run single in fifth inning

DEXTER -Errors in the field have plagued the Dexter softball team all season. Tuesday afternoon’s Eastern Maine Class C prelim game against George Stevens wasn’t a clean one for the Tigers, but Sarah Carnes’ effort helped overcome Dexter’s miscues.

Carnes hit a two-run single to help Dexter rally against the Eagles and scattered six hits as the No. 6 Tigers edged No. 11 GSA of Blue Hill 4-3 at the high school field.

Dexter, now 13-4, advances to Thursday’s quarterfinal game at No. 3 Calais.

GSA wraps up the season with an 11-6 record.

The Tigers were facing a one-run deficit in the fifth when Carnes drove a two-out, bases-loaded single into center field. Julie Lockhart (double) and Brittany Veazie (hit-by-pitch) scored on the hit, which came after two Tiger batters popped up in the infield.

“I could see it coming,” Carnes said of her big moment at the plate. “I had my head right in there. … It usually takes us a while to get in there and start hitting.”

The pop-ups gave the Eagles some hope that the Tigers wouldn’t be able to regain the lead late.

“I thought we were going to get out of it after that,” GSA coach John Greene said. “But the Carnes girl had a nice little hit. That’s what can happen.”

The two runs helped void a throwing error in the fourth that gave George Stevens a 2-1 lead.

GSA’s Cristy Moon had reached on a fielder’s choice and Patti Lymburner, the next batter, laid down a bunt to try to move Moon over to second. Dexter catcher Sara Wyman picked up the ball but overthrew to first baseman Sabrina Cote. The ball rolled deep enough into right field to allow both runners to score.

Dexter got a run back in the bottom of the inning when Cote singled to drive in Nikki Chapman, who also singled. The Eagles tacked on another run in the fifth on an error, a stolen base, a sacrifice bunt and a Rachael Wardwell RBI single.

“George Stevens has a lot of good hitters and players,” Dexter coach Galen Chapman said. “I have a lot of respect for that team. We were lucky to win that game. They hit the ball hard.”

Carnes walked one and struck out five. She retired eight straight to end the game.

“My fastball was working well,” she said. “I just stayed relaxed and that was pretty much it.”

Veazie scored the first run in the third inning when she tagged home while the GSA fielders were in a rundown with Dexter’s Cindy Koscielny.
