Central Aroostook Junior-Senior High School

MARS HILL – Central Aroostook Junior-Senior High School of Mars Hill has announced the honor parts for the Class of 2004. Commencement exercises will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, June 11, in the Central Aroostook Junior-Senior High School gymnasium.

Stephen Smith, son of Kevin and Heidi Smith of Blaine, has been named valedictorian for the Class of 2004. He plans to attend Bowdoin College to study biochemistry and pre-medicine.

He participated in high school band and has been a member of the All-Maine Choir twice. He has served as treasurer of the Mars Hill Future Farmers of America, secretary of the National Honor Society, and president of the French club. He participated in the math team, drama club, trust team, volleyball, golf and the YMCA Model State Legislature.

Smith spent last summer participating in a research fellowship at the Mount Desert Island Biological Laboratory. He has been the recipient of several awards, including Maine Principals’ Association Principals’ Award, Elks MVS Award, National Merit Scholarship, Maine Scholars Award, Future Farmers of America State Degree, All-American Scholar, and National Future Farmers of America Choir.

He has been an active member of his community and has volunteered for the Red Cross Blood Drive and the community cupboard.

Amanda Johnston, daughter of Dale and Judy Johnston of Mars Hill, has been named salutatorian for the Class of 2004. She plans to attend the University of Maine to study English and film.

Johnston is the senior class vice president and National Honor Society president. She served as president of the French club during her sophomore year. She has been involved in the varsity club, math team, and YMCA Model State Legislature. She has served as editor of the yearbook, and as softball and soccer statistician.

Johnston has participated in the Red Cross Blood Drive, Recreation Department Halloween Party, Special Olympics, trust team, and Who’s Who Among American High School Students.

Stevi Fletcher, daughter of Steven and Tammie Fletcher of Mars Hill, has been named first honor essayist for the Class of 2004. She plans to attend the University of Maine to study business administration and food nutrition.

She is the senior class president, has participated in soccer, basketball, and softball, and was named County All-Star in those sports. Other activities have included Mars Hill Future Farmers of American chapter president, National Honor Society treasurer, varsity club, and French club. She was recognized in Who’s Who in academics and sports. She has been involved in several community activities such as Red Cross Blood Drive, coach for recreation soccer and basketball, and server at the Mars Hill Community Club St. Patrick’s Day breakfast.

Fletcher was recently crowned Miss Greater Mars Hill for 2004.

Isaac Sargent, son of Alan and Janet Sargent of Bridgewater, has been named second honor essayist. He plans to attend the University of Maine to study mechanical engineering.

He has been involved in the Future Farmers of America through high school, has attended the National Convention in Louisville, Ky., State FFA Convention, and participated in the FFA events at the Northern Maine Fair. He has received several awards for his service in FFA-related activities.

Sargent has been a member of the French club and the National Honor Society. His community activities have included assisting with the American Red Cross Blood Drive and the Veterans Day breakfast. He has been involved in agriculture through high school, working on a local farm for the past eight years.
