The Challenger Learning Center of Maine, on Cleveland Street off Maine Avenue in Bangor, will hold a grand opening Friday and Saturday, June 4 and 5. Among the scheduled events are guided tours, children’s activities, and visits from astronauts Rick Hauck and Kenneth Reightler.
In addition, Grace Corrigan, mother of Christa McAuliffe, the teacher who died in the 1986 Challenger accident, and June Scobee Rodgers, widow of Challenger commander Richard Scobee, are scheduled to speak.
Thanks to a donation from KeyBank, children will have the opportunity to enter a drawing for one of two scholarships for a weeklong Space Explorer Camp at the Learning Center.
From 3 to 7 p.m. Friday, Corrigan will sign copies of her book, “A Journal for Christa.” Also, a Star Party being held from 7:30 to 10 p.m. will include guided tours; a discussion with astronaut Kenneth Reightler, who has logged more than 300 hours in space; a children’s nighttime story reading; and an opportunity to learn about the night sky with the Penobscot Valley Star Gazing Club.
On Saturday, the grand opening begins at 10 a.m. with a tree planting ceremony and a community dedication. Astronaut Rick Hauck, who has spent more than 400 hours in space, and June Scobee Rodgers will speak. From 11;30 a.m. to 2 p.m. there will be guided tours, space lectures, a book signing by Rodgers, author of “Silver Linings, Triumph of the Challenger 7,” children’s games; and an announcement of Space Explorer Camp winners.
