Chiropractic Acupuncture

BANGOR – There will be a seminar titled “Chiropractic Acupuncture – Is It For You?” 7-8 p.m. Tuesday, June 8, in the Conference Room at Myerowitz Chiropractic Center, 1570 Broadway. Admission is free, and seating is limited and by reservation.

In the early 1970s, three men introduced acupuncture into the United States. Two were oriental medical doctors. The third was a chiropractic doctor whose health had been restored by a combination of chiropractic and acupuncture methods.

Since that time, many chiropractic doctors have been trained in chiropractic acupuncture. Patients seeking chiropractic services have had the added benefit of this service by those Maine chiropractic doctors who have taken the required training program, successfully passed the proficiency examinations and obtained state certification.

Chiropractic acupuncture is not effective for every condition, officials said. Nor does chiropractic acupuncture claim to help everyone treated. The PowerPoint program will provide an overview of chiropractic acupuncture, as well as information about what help can be expected for those who qualify as candidates for chiropractic acupuncture.

Continued Recognition Certificate

BANGOR – St. Joseph Healthcare’s Diabetes and Nutrition Center was recently awarded a Continued Recognition Certificate from the American Diabetes Association for its quality Diabetes Self-Management Education program. The program was originally recognized in January 2001.

The ADA Education Recognition assures that education programs have met the national standards for DSME programs. Programs that meet these standards are considered to have a staff of knowledgeable health professionals able to provide up-to-date diabetes information to their patients. Obtaining self-management education allows patients to gain the information necessary to control their disease.

St. Joseph Healthcare’s Diabetes and Nutrition Center offers a wide range of services to diabetes patients. These services include a pre-assessment interview, nutrition assessment and initial meal plan by a dietitian, small group instruction in diabetes self-management and four follow-up visits.

Accreditation in Ultrasound Services

BANGOR – St. Joseph Hospital’s radiology department was recently awarded a three-year term of accreditation in ultrasound services from the American College of Radiology.

This accreditation was a result of a survey of the department by board-certified physicians and medical physicists who are experts in the field. Surveyors visited St. Joseph Hospital and reviewed qualifications of the department’s personnel and adequacy of their equipment. The radiology department received a near perfect score of 98.45 out of 100.

St. Joseph Hospital’s radiology department offers services such as standard X-rays, interventional radiology, digital fluoroscopy, ultrasounds, computerized tomography and magnetic resonance imaging.

Give Back a Smile

BANGOR – Local dentist Dr. Shaun N. Dowd, a member of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, is a volunteer for the AACD’s Give Back a Smile program to heal the effects of domestic violence by providing free consultation and dental treatment to restore the smiles of survivors.

Domestic violence survivors who have suffered dental injuries as a direct result of abuse can contact the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence at (800) 773-4227 to apply. The survivor then undergoes screening sessions with the NCADV and a local counselor to determine if he or she is eligible for the program.
