High school musicians

BANGOR – Maine Public Radio will present the Bangor Symphony Orchestra on its “Maine Stage” program with special appearances by area high school musicians at 8 p.m. June 9.

Recorded on May 16, the performance includes Franz Schubert’s Symphony No. 8, “Unfinished” and Albert Franz Doppler’s “Fantasie Pastorale Hongroise, op. 26,” featuring flute soloist Reed Gochberg, winner of the Annas-Cupp Award.

Gochberg is a junior at John Bapst Memorial High School in Bangor. The Annas-Cupp Award is the only competition in the state that provides an opportunity for the winning high school musicians to play with the entire Bangor Symphony Orchestra.

The program also includes Jue Wang’s “Elegy” and Georges Bizet’s “L’Arlessienne Suite No. 2.” Wang is a junior at Bangor High School who composed the piece in memory of his former teacher, who passed away in 2003. Members of the Bangor High School orchestra will perform “Elegy” with the BSO.

Scholarships

Gabriel Guerin of Glenburn, Brandon Libby of Brewer, and Ryan Trosper of Limestone have each been selected to receive a $500 Golf Privilege Card Scholarship from the American Lung Association of Maine and participating golf courses. The scholarships are presented in the names of 93 golf courses and driving ranges that generously donate free or discounted playtime to holders of the Lung Association’s Golf Privilege Card.

2004 marks the eighth year for the Lung Association scholarships. To date, $12,000 in scholarship money has been awarded to 24 Maine seniors who have a connection with golf and who are pursuing health careers.

Girl Scouting

BAXTER STATE PARK – More than 80 Girl Scout volunteers and families spent part of Memorial Day weekend in a “Helping Hands Weekend” at Camp Natarswi to set up tents, clean the camp, fix roofs, work on plumbing and wiring and enjoy canoeing, kayaking, hiking and mountain biking.

From noon to 6 p.m. June 6, the public is invited to attend an open house at the resident camp. Visitors may tour the camp, talk to the staff and bring a picnic lunch if they want to spend time exploring the grounds.

Camp Natarswi has been a summer destination for Maine Girl Scouts since 1936. For information, call (800) 464-3858.

Junior Classical League

The Hampden Academy Junior Classical League will be holding a Borders Benefit weekend June 5 and 6.

This year, the group will be sending 19 delegates to the National JCL convention at the University of Richmond.

This weekend, 15 percent of any purchase made at Borders in Bangor, located on Bangor Mall Boulevard, with a ticket will help pay for the National convention’s delegation’s expenses. Mesa Hispanica

BANGOR – The next of Mesa Hispanica will take place at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, June 3, at Borders on Bangor Mall Boulevard. Mesa Hispanica is organized by the Hermon High School Spanish Club and is intended to give people the opportunity to converse in Spanish and share their experiences with Hispanic cultures.

LeadAmerica conference

DEDHAM – Krystal Baker of Dedham has been selected to attend LeadAmerica’s 2004 Congressional Student Leadership Conference in Boston.

Baker was chosen to attend the Crime Scene Investigation conference, July 15-24, where she will learn about DNA sequencing, fingerprinting and use realistic hands-on simulations. Upon completion of the conference, Baker will be awarded one college credit and the ability to purchase a second college credit at a reduced fee.

The CSLC is a college-accredited invitational leadership program for academically talented and promising young leaders.

The family would like to thank all who contributed returnables to help Baker attend the conference. She needed about $2,500 and is close to that amount. Special thanks go to Doris Kidder, who donated an afghan. Raffle tickets will be sold from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, June 27, at Marden’s in Brewer.

Baker is a junior at Brewer High School and is planning on pursuing a career in forensics.

Bangor Theological Seminary

BANGOR – Melissa MacCrae of Brewer was awarded the master of arts degree during commencement ceremonies May 21 at Bangor Theological Seminary.

MacCrae completed a project titled “An Ethical Response to Abuse Victims Who Kill” as part of her degree work.

EMCC

BANGOR – The Community & Business Information Network, or Combinet, in collaboration with the U.S. Small Business Administration, Fleet Bank and Eastern Maine Development Corp., has selected Eastern Maine Community College’s Bangor Business and Information Center to be the recipient of reference material funds to establish a business reference information resource on the EMCC campus. The $15,000 grant will provide a reference material repository, including print and nonprint media as well as software programs for people developing and growing their own small businesses.

EMCC’s site will become part of a network of Business Information Centers throughout Northern New England. Three other sites exist in Maine in the Lewiston-Auburn area, Portland and Sanford.

Included in the grant is a provision for those using the resource to have access to a certified small business consultant, Mike Ballesteros, director of EMCC’s new Small Business-Entrepreneurial Program.

The Business Information Center will be established and located in the New Technical Resource Center and Library by late August, when renovation to Katahdin Hall is completed. Library staff will facilitate the Business Information Center.

Emmanuel College

BOSTON – Erica E. Brooks of Brewer received a bachelor’s degree in economics and management during commencement ceremonies May 8 at Emmanuel College.

Liberty University

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Camie Lorraine Poplaski of Winterport was named to the dean’s list at Liberty University for the spring semester.

Nazareth College

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Allison Frazier of Bangor has been named to the dean’s list at Nazareth College for the spring semester.

NESCom

BANGOR – The New England School of Communications, an affiliate of Husson College, had a total of 29 graduation candidates at its 22nd commencement exercises May 15. The school prepares students for positions in radio, television and allied communications fields.

Graduating with high honors were Chad Leighton of Winthrop, associate degree; Liana Dawn Nichols of Kingfield, associate degree; and Emily Jean Farkas of Woodland, bachelor’s degree.

Receiving associate degrees with honors were Kristina M. Garcelon, Hermon; Jeremy Lavway of Presque Isle and Bangor; Kenneth Lucas III of Benton; and Justin Seamans of Bath. James Emmert of Eastport earned a bachelor’s degree with honors.

Pensacola Christian College

PENSACOLA, Fla. – Julie Ann McDonald was named to the dean’s list at Pensacola Christian College for the spring semester.

She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Michael McDonald of Corinth.

St. Michael’s College

COLCHESTER, Vt. – Natalie Ann Skall earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and English literature, graduating magna cum laude May 13 at St. Michael’s College.

Skall is the daughter of Philip and Mary Drew of Orono.

University of New England

BIDDEFORD – Kathleen Mary Donovan was awarded a master’s degree in physical therapy during commencement ceremonies May 15 at the University of New England.

Donovan is the daughter of Mike and Nancy Preble of Bangor and of Kevin Donovan of Lewiston. She plans to return to Bangor to work and prepare for the state licensing examination in physical therapy.
