Danforth double sparks Hermon

HERMON – Phil Cayford scored the game-winning run on a Brett Danforth double to lead No. 2 Hermon past No. 10 Erskine Academy of South China 11-10 in an Eastern Maine Class B baseball quarterfinal Thursday.

Danforth had two doubles and a single with an RBI for the Hawks and Cayford hit a three-run home run in the third inning. Nate Ellis doubled and singled with two RBIs and Cory Archer hit a double and a single.

Steve Hannan had two singles with an RBI for Erskine. Ben Powell also hit two singles and Jason Hutchinson had a two-run single.

At Dover-Foxcroft, Kyle Shay’s two-run single in the third inning proved to be the difference in the game as the Trojans upset the Ponies.

Andy Pooler added three singles and Tim Buell two more singles for No. 5 Mount Desert Island.

Matt Carey hit a solo homer for No. 4 Foxcroft. Shawn Grass had an RBI single and Justin Freeman hit an RBI double. Josh Withee singled twice.

At Winslow, Brian Mannke’s bases-loaded single over a drawn-in outfield drove home Steven Siviski with one out in the bottom of the seventh to rally No. 1 Winslow past No. 9 Maine Central Institute of Pittsfield.

Winslow trailed 2-0 entering the bottom of the seventh, but pinch-runner John Goulette scored on a wild pitch and Eric Lopez plated the tying run with a sacrifice fly. Winslow then loaded the bases again before Mannke delivered the game-winning hit.

MCI’s Andrew deBerthune allowed just three hits in six-plus innings on the mound. The Huskies’ Victor Quint had two singles.

Presque Isle 4, John Bapst 3

At Presque Isle, junior lefthander Chad Lavway pitched a 14-walk, no-hitter and drove in the winning run with a pop fly single in the three-run fifth inning as third seed Presque Isle rallied from a 3-1 deficit.

Lavway struck out 11 en route to his first career no-hitter and survived a three-run fifth inning in which he issued six of his walks.

Presque Isle’s decisive rally in the bottom of the fifth began with an error and a walk.

Tim Lyford’s infield single and a throwing error produced the first run; Jeff Cole’s two-out single tied it and, after Cole stole second, Lavway blooped his single just beyond the infield.

Alex Means pitched a six-hitter for No. 6 John Bapst of Bangor, striking out six and walking two.

Lyford had two singles for the Wildcats.

At Millinocket, Matt Nickerson singled home younger brother Josh Nickerson in the top of the seventh as the No. 7 Vikings knocked off the No. 2 Minutemen.

Matt Mercer hit a solo home run in the second and Spencer Garton doubled, singled and drove in a run for Searsport.

Matt Wark paced Stearns with three singles. Matt Barnett doubled, singled and added an RBI while Craig Jandreau had a double and an RBI. Joe Manzo had a sacrifice fly for the Minutemen.

At Blue Hill, Dan Hilts allowed two hits and struck out seven in five innings as the No. 1 Eagles rolled over the No. 8 Tigers of East Sullivan.

Lance Gale paced GSA with a two-run single. Ross Gallagher hit a double and a single with an RBI. Will Rosenthal singled twice and drove in a run.

Trevor Renwick and Kyle Joy each singled for Sumner.

Tyler Gardner tripled, singled and plated two runs while Jason Murchison had two doubles and two RBIs for Mattanawcook. Bryan Berry added two singles.

Jeff Ramsdell led the No. 6 Raiders of East Machias with a double, single and two RBIs. Steve Colbeth hit two singles and a double, driving in two runs while Mark Fields and Ryan Harmon singled twice.

Eric Gendreau had two singles to drive in two runs for Madawaska and also struck out nine batters and Billy Roy hit two singles.

At Dyer Brook, sophomore righthander Adam Anderson pitched a one-hitter as the second-ranked Warriors earned a trip to Saturday’s Eastern D semifinals.

Justin Phinney’s bunt single leading off the sixth inning was the only hit for No. 10 Bangor Christian off Anderson, who struck out 13 and walked three.

Anderson also drove in two runs with a double and a sacrifice fly. Zack Philibert and Evan McGary also had RBI singles for Southern Aroostook.

At Mars Hill, Bryant Ciomei pitched a three-hitter and Isaac Martin singled twice as No. 5 Deer Isle-Stonington ousted defending Eastern D champion Central Aroostook.

The Mariners scored three runs in the top of the first inning to take control, capitalizing on a pair of fielder’s choices, three walks and three passed balls.

Adam Crew doubled and Tim Carlson had an RBI single for No. 4 Central Aroostook.

Burton Brayall hit two singles to knock in two runs for Katahdin. O’Neil Qualey tripled and Cameron Cunningham had a two-run single.
