Old Town hearing to discuss reuse of school

OLD TOWN – A public hearing on the potential reuse of the Herbert Sargent School to house the city’s administrative offices will be held at the 7 p.m. Monday, June 7, council meeting at the Old Town Public Library.

The hearing comes after public request for information at a May council meeting. Some residents are concerned that municipal services may be moved to the outskirts of town and presented the council with a petition calling for a public hearing on the matter.

Council members previously have stated that a new site has not been selected and that all options are still being looked into.

The lowest bid to renovate the Helen Hunt School came in $1.3 million higher than the town originally had anticipated, and the council has since begun to look into other options.

The Helen Hunt School is located at the center of town, where residents feel services should remain.

The H.E. Sargent School is being considered as another possible site. The council has had a chance to review the feasibility study of that option and now is prepared to discuss it with the public.

New municipal offices have been discussed in Old Town for about 20 years, but it hasn’t been until the last six or seven months that extensive work has been done to find a suitable site, Council Chairman Alan Stormann said at a meeting last month.
