The Lighthouse Sports Network, comprised of four radio stations airing the Bangor Lumberjacks’ home games live this season, has expanded its broadcast schedule.
Thanks to the abrupt folding of the Allentown (Pa.) Ambassadors franchise last month and the Northeast League’s formation of an independent travel team to take Allentown’s place on the regular season schedule, the Lumberjacks gained six extra home games and their Bangor-based radio network added six live broadcasts.
The move means that Bangor flagship station WHCF (88.5 FM), sister station WHMX (105.7 FM) of Lincoln and translator stations in Presque Isle (102.7 FM) and Waterville (100.5 FM) will air all the Lumberjacks’ home games and 52 of their 92 regular-season games overall.
Due to a technical problem, broadcasts on the Waterville translator (100.5 FM) will be delayed until further notice, according to WHCF-WHMX general manager Wayne Frost.
The network also will air Lumberjacks playoff games.
So long to Sassone
Former Presque Isle television sportscaster and Bangor radio announcer Scott Sassone has moved south.
The 27-year-old New York native have moved to Portland with his wife, former WLBZ 2 news reporter Kara Matuszewski.
Matuszewski was hired by Portland TV station WCSH 6 as a full-time reporter and morning-weekend anchor.
“It was something where I felt I should go with her and see what I could find down there,” Sassone said. “I looked at this as a chance to get into a bigger market even though I didn’t have anything lined up. I’m just calling a lot of people and checking to see if they have any openings. Hopefully something will open up.”
After graduating from State University of New York-Fredonia, the Rochester native took a job at Presque Isle’s WAGM (Ch. 8) as a sports anchor. He then moved to Bangor and worked briefly at WLBZ 2 before moving to radio and all-sports station WZON (620 AM), where he worked as an afternoon show host and play-by-play announcer for University of Maine women’s basketball.
Currently, Sassone is working for Westbrook all-sports radio station WJAB (1440 AM) in the studio.
“At this point, I’m doing some part-time work with radio and checking into a couple things that are possibly opening up,” he said. “I started in TV so I may end up going back into TV, or maybe be a photojournalist.”
