Man accused of writing bad checks at store

Bangor police charged a Greenbush man after he allegedly wrote Home Depot $2,876.02 worth of checks drawn on a closed account over a weeklong period.

Officer Steve Jordan said that on May 21, a Home Depot employee told him that Stephen Warren, 20, of Greenbush had written several bad checks at the store. Most of them were used to buy gift cards, ranging in value from $300 to $500, starting on April 29.

The gift cards were used to purchase other merchandise, the employee said, but by the time the last transaction was made on May 7, the store knew the checks were bouncing. Warren was caught on video during most of the transactions. Jordan said Warren reportedly wrote bad checks at the Ellsworth Home Depot as well.

On Thursday, June 3, Jordan found Warren at Penobscot County Jail on probation hold, and told him he wanted to speak with him about the bad checks. Warren told Jordan that he wanted to “lawyer up.” Jordan charged Warren with negotiating a worthless instrument.

Jordan said the checks were from account 85173946 from First National Bank of Bar Harbor under the name Stephen Warren. The check numbers written at Home Depot ranged from 126 to 225, but not all have been accounted for. Anybody believing they received checks from this closed account are encouraged to call their local law enforcement agency.

The man denied hitting the woman, Gloria Perkins, 44, of Brewer. Dearing said Perkins told him several times that she “beat the [expletive] out of him” because she was angry at him, and because she loved him and wanted to keep him. Perkins was arrested and charged with domestic assault, and taken to Penobscot County Jail. Her boyfriend was uncooperative, Dearing said.
