TOPSHAM – Senior righthander Mark Rogers pitched a one-hitter with 17 strikeouts and no walks as top-ranked Mount Ararat shut out No. 8 Hampden Academy 4-0 in an Eastern Maine Class A baseball quarterfinal Friday.

This game was scoreless until the sixth inning, when the Eagles scored all their runs. Two came home on suicide squeeze bunts by Brent Williams and Ethan Ogilby, while Ryan Bichrest singled home another run.

Jim Ouellette added two singles for Mount Ararat.

Rogers (8-0), the national Gatorade player of the year, yielded only a single to Mike Brown in the first inning.

Hampden righthander Pat Moran pitched a six-hitter, striking out four and walking four.

At Ashland, Amber Smith hit two doubles and a solo home run to lead No. 3 Ashland past No. 6 Central Aroostook of Mars Hill in an Eastern Maine Class D quarterfinal.

Danielle Long hit a triple and three singles for the Hornets. Beth Chamberlin had a double and three singles with three RBIs and Ashlee Peters hit a solo homer in the third inning and singled.

Stevi Fletcher had two doubles and a single with three RBIs for Central Aroostook. Jessica Grew hit a double and two singles to drive in two runs and Sami Brewer added three singles and scored four runs.

At Dyer Brook, Erin Foster pitched the four-hit shutout and struck out four to help No. 9 Hodgdon upset No. 1 Southern Aroostook.

Lindsey Stewart hit three singles and drove in three runs for Hodgdon. Chantel Dwyer and Tasha Dwyer each doubled and singled.

Jordan Sholler hit a double for Southern Aroostook.
